I don't have a set number of feeding times, but rather the number feeding times is set by the age of the fish (fry, maybe 5-4x daily),whether I am conditioning the fish and with what (if with live food, again 4-5 times), the habits of the fish, nocturnal ones being fed once daily just before lights out.
In a tank with adult fish, none of whom are being conditioned to spawn, I would think that I feed usually 2x daily.-------------rick

Good morning,

I feed my fish once a day, every day, sparingly.

This turned out to be a cute thread, no?

Everyone with stories about how and why their fish eat the way they do

Lazy fish that won't get out of bed (chuckles, shakes head).

I feed same time twice a day. I have a hospital tank currently and because it is a 5 gal I feed once a day as the water quality goes down quicker than the larger tanks. I am going to go to every 2nd day in my hospital tank. For the larger tanks it depends if you have some cat fish or other cleaners in the tank as well. I am feeding less in one of the tanks as I had a snail outbreak.

I usually feed enough that fish can consume in about a minute, 1 time every other day.

This feeding schedule seems to work fine for me and keeps my tank clean. And fish will eat as much as you put in there.

Oh my, my mollies would freak out! They do their best to convince me that they are starving 24x7 even with 2 (smallish, gone in under a minute) feedings per day.

They will not starve, I guarantee you. I have gone on vacation for a week without feeding them. It's better to underfeed than overfeed for many reasons. Many fish overeat as it is and if they are hungry, they will find thing in the tank to eat.

I usually just do half block of blood worms once a day for 7 fish. Once awhile I'll use omega flakes. But thinking about uping it to half a block 2x a day..so a full block

I just feed them and I timed how long it took it was 48 seconds so you are saying to feed them for 1 minute every day or every other day? That sounds pretty good to me.... I have another question how long should I keep fish food I have had my omega one flakes for 6.5 months should I go get new food? And also do you guys like fluval or omega one fish food?? These are the only good brands they have at my fish store so I'm not interested in hearing about others cause I live wayyyy out in the country and the other fish store is a 45 minute drive so screw that l..thank you to anyone who responds?

I've never tried the fluval choice but have tried the Omega One sinking pellets for my goldfish. I also have the Omega One Shrimp pellets that I crush up pretty small for my tropical fish. They seem to love it. I have other brands of food also but you said your not interested in those for your fish store doesn't carry anything else other than the two you mentioned.

I feed all my fish twice a day with a variety of with small/normal meals. I don't think they are being over fed at all. I personally wouldn't want to feed them every other day.

The trouble with feeding them buy time is that some will just keep eating and eating and eating before the time is up. Do it by amount. Once in morning. And once at night

Keep in mine people that these are cold blooded creatures. They need far less food than warm blooded. They can eat more than they need. (dogs will do this, act like they are starving even though they just ate) Eating more than they need effects the fishes health and their waste is much more likely to be high in nutrients to fuel the nitrogen cycle.

Look and the condition and health of the fish. Also different fish have different dietary needs. Take a danio vs a glass cat. Glass for the most part stay in one spot where a danio will spend its day darting all over the tank. Do you believe they both need the same amount of food?

Thunder: My almost 12 year old Lhasa Apso must be an exception for when I put down about 1/2 cup of dog food at each meal (morning and early evening) and if she gets full she will leave the remainder food in the dish. I'll go ahead and pick it up within 5 minutes if she doesn't return to it to finish eating it up.

I agree with your second paragraph. Common sense takes into effect with different scenarios of tank setups.

I need to have our dogs Pebbles (13) and Rufus (11) talk to your dog

They are starving if you ask them. Even when the Vet scolds us if they gain weight.

HI there.
I happen to be from where the arowana comes from. And I'm always perplexed by the fact that this endangered species can even be found so fast away from its origin. ^_^
Super worms are great as snack but over here we don't recommend it to be staple food for arowana.. often causing constipation and sometimes it gets so bad that it hurts the anus to bleed.. and when it happens that the fish is not at its tip top, infections could just manifest easily..

So yeah..

My fish eats roughly
Fresh water prawn/shrimp 70%
Pellets 10%
Cricket 5%
Frogs 5%
Others 5% (super worm, house lizard, earth worm, centipede)

It's been slowly turning red over the past 3 weeks ^_^ I'm happy

I am so confused on how often to feed my fish. I had only been feeding them once a day. I currently have in my 55 gallon:

1 male molly
2 male platy
4 albino cory

I am buying 3 more cory and transferring 2 male guppy (in my 10 gallon) this weekend. I currently fees flakes and 3 shrimp pellets once a day. I just purchased HikarI tubifex worms and Omega One veggie rounds.

How often should I fees them these foods? And how many rounds/veggie rounds? Thanks!

I think I made a mistake today. I gave the fish one veggie round. It took them about 2 hours to eat it. Maybe only give them half??

I have a 40 breeder with 12 lambchop rasboras, 3 guppies, 8 peppered corys, RCS, and nerite as well as mts snails. I feed 3-4 shrimp pellets in the morning and then 3-4 at night. I feed about 3 pinches of crush flakes in the morning and 3 pinches at night. 1 algae wafer every couple days.

I'm not sure how big those are as I've never fed them. I guess that'd be ok but did you crush it into little pieces and sprinkle it around the tank? Corys don't get much nutrition from veggie rounds since they're carnivores.

About the size of a dime. Well . I swear I read veggie rounds are good for them. Now I already opened up the package. I did not crush it up. Now one of my platies looks bloated. Ugh!!! Stupid mistake.

You could just skip a feeding tomorrow.

Al913
  • #234
Yeah you could skip a feeding don't get tempted to feed your fish since at least for me they all rush over to where I normally feed them. Everytime I go near the tank they all come into the top corner.

Typically I think most people overfeed vs. underfeed fish (me included).

How often do I feed my fish. ?

I was told by the pet shop to feed them every 2 days but on the flake food box the label says to feed 3 times a day.

Will I feed them every 2 days or once a day.
