Tips for setting up low-tech tank.

Hey everyone! After the unfortunate demise of my betta fish, I now want to use his old tank as a new low tech tank. I have a high pH (8.0) and I’m not a master with plants (in fact most of my plants inevitably die) so I am wondering what plants I should use/how to integrate them. Any tips would be awesome! It’s a six gallon tank and the pH will be 8.0-8.2.
Thanks!

Anubias and Java fern are practically indestructible if treated right. Just attach them to some wood or a rock and let them grow. Java fern doesn’t do well with strong lights, so watch out for that. Another easy one is hornwort. Plant it in the substrate or just let it float. All of these do well with a high ph. Guppy grass, anacharis, and swords are all also good ones. Swords, anacharis, and hornwort are all background plants, and guppy grass will just do what it wants. Most of the others can go in the middle of the tank. A good, tough carpet plant for the front is dwarf sagittaria. Just some easy and cheap plants for high ph.

Thanks so much, that really helps.

Out of what was mentioned, I can confirm that Java fern is a great plant for a noob. Might melt a bit at first, but give it time and it will come around. Another plant I had virtually no problems with is a pearl weed. Some of the Ludwigia I got is doing great, but some have stem rot, so it's a mixed bag. I'm assuming Vallisneria is too tall for a ex-betta tank.
I had bad experiences with both hornswort and guppy grass, they rotted for me and in addition to that they both make huge mess when melting, because they're so fragile. I still don't know what went wrong with them, as they're generally praised as easy beginner plants.

I tried java fern, and it all died. I'll have to look into pearl weed and ludwigia, so thanks for the advice!

Anubias, Java moss, and Java fern are all super easy plants that work in most conditions

My java moss did well, and the anubias that I've had just doesn't grow and the java fern that I tried all died in a few days. The reason I stopped the java moss was because of an algae bloom and the algae did really well in the java moss.

Anubis tends to be a very slow grower. Just a leaf or two per month.

Hornwort died for me. Elodea is meant to be pretty indestructible but managed to kill that too.

Spiralis and straight vallisneria, dwarf sag and Amazon sword is doing really good in my low tech set ups. And anubias nana of course

Interesting. My anubias has not grown at all, and I have had them since like March. I think I'm doing something wrong... they haven't attached to the rock yet either. I used super glue to attach them but it didn't attach.

Cool, that's good to know. What is your pH?

Erm 7.4 or 7.8 I think
Oh ok, cool. I hope that these plants could survive in my higher pH.

Where did you get your plants? If you get them somewhere with completely different water, maybe the sudden change kills them. Try looking up some adds from private sellers (like on craigslist or local facebook groups) so that you can find plants grown pretty much next door, with identical water.

Yes, this makes perfect sense, although the only problem is that my pipes (just my house and maybe the block idk) raise the pH of the water. Most of the neighborhood has a pH of 7.0-7.4, while mine is 8.2. So I could drip acclimate if you do that with plants?
