How about a badge for Plants/Fish/inverts for sale then maybe people can see them and either PM or we can add a link to our Badge that will bring them to our specific thread?

It's not really what I would call a badge, and anyways if they want to display what they have for sale they can put it in their signature.

IMO, one of the most knowledgeable members regarding Plants, fertilizers, lighting & water chemistry is Chanyi. If I had a clue about the guru nomination process, Chanyi would get my endorsement.

You just have to pm a mod.

If you're on mobile, go to your profile and click the 'badge' section. Theres a little green megaphone next to your badge, click that to toggle them off and on.

I dont know if PC version is the same I've never used the site on PC

Where is the badge section in your profile on mobile?

Where it says 'profile posts,' 'latest activity' ect, swipe left on that bar. The badge section is near the end, second to last I think

But he is already a plant guru. Are you implying that he should have two plant badges ?

Guru for fish food and stuff like that ? Ex. how to feed otos if they are only wanting to eat algae but their owner can't grow enough algae, or nutritional values on foods like Hikari, Bug Bites, etc. Also for things like which algaes are "edible" and which aren't.

This is no longer guru material. This is common sense level material. Anyways you can feed your otto rasphery green or zuc or algae wafers or nls algae pellets. Also otto do require a bit of meat now and then so don't forget the shrimp pellet. Anyway a lot of this basic material can be found after a few weeks of experience or a little reading. IMHO guru are the ones who have knowledge that you can't find with a little searching. Those tidbits that transcend basic information and one can only gain from years of experience.

I just searched for a shipping guru and couldn't find one. I am aware of internet resources describing how it should be done, but each situation is different requiring a different approach.

To be fair, some of us could probably benefit from a common sense guru.

It's me. I am 'some of us'

The main problem with having a common sense guru is I really don't think it is something that can be taught. We either have it or we don't. Either we are born with it or we have cultivated it over the years.

I am not sure I would place you in the "some of us" column.

I know I was kidding I'm definitely not advocating for a common sense guru haha

I think the list of Gurus is going to be ever changing. I've been around long enough to see established, knowledgeable members suddenly disappear never to be heard from again. Life happens.
If I remember correctly, a while back, StarGirl started a Guru thread. Just wondering how many of those original Gurus are still around.

Yeah I remember that one too, that was self proclaimed. The one I had was called "Who's the Pro" and everyone was saying who was best at different things. We had the different categories and people nominated and we made a list. I can never find it. Maybe Coradee remembers? It was most of our current Guru's like Coralbandit, Chromedome, Chanyi etc.

These badges will be given to members that have deep knowledge about a certain subject and have demonstrated it over a period of time here on the forum. These guru badges should be very restrictive in my opinion. So please, please, please don't be offended if you don't get this badge.

How to get a guru badge:
Members have to be nominated (by other members or moderators) and then the moderators will make the final decision on who gets these badges as a quality check. Send a private message to a moderator to nominate someone. These badges could be used to help identify trusted sources of information to tag in threads when someone really needs help with something.

But I don't want to be a guru!
If you are given a guru badge and don't want it, reach out to a moderator to have it removed. You can also toggle it on/off in the badges section of your profile if you find yourself being tagged too often. The last thing we want to do is annoy you.

Like other new additions to the forum, we can always disable these badges if it leads to hard feelings or it just isn't working as intended.

My hope though is that it becomes easier to identify good and trusted sources of info for new members to the forum.

Also, you can always see the current badges by going to the help page > badges at the bottom of every page. Or go here: Badges

I also need more ideas on guru badges to create.
I tried to start with some of the big hitters first and we can fine tune as we go. Here are the current guru badges:
Betta Guru
Cichlid Guru
Cycle Guru
Fish Disease Guru
Fish ID Guru
Plant Guru
Shrimp Guru

Thanks,
Mike

richiep deserves one for his vast knowledge of shrimp.
Edit: LOL HE ALREADY HAS ONE xD!!!

Pleco guru? I feel plecos are fish that can mind-boggle beginners due to their varying size, behaviour and diet. If there‘s one fish that takes number one spot for surprising hobbyists after they do research it’s anything in the pleco family.

Not to worry, Grasshopper. It is not the Destination that is important. What is important is what you learn in during the Journey.
