Eheim Classic Filter Problems

Hello. I am having a serious problem with my Eheim Classic 600 (2217). When we have a power outage (power goes off and comes right back on within a second) the filter pops the top off and water goes everywhere!!! Thank goodness we have been here when it happened otherwise it would have been a much bigger mess with dead fish!! Can anyone tell me why this is happening? I have been running only this filter since March of this year in my 75 gallon. I used to run it and an Eheim Classic 350 (2215) in the same tank for over 3 years with no problems, but at our previous house a few years ago before we moved. Never had this problem on either filter before we moved!! They seem to run great, except for this. HELP me avoid a messy flood! Thank you in advance!

When you say the top pops off, do you mean the clips holding it locked actually pop open?

Yes what exactly are you referring to “Popping” off?

Yes, the metal clips pop off and the top pops up and water is coming out everywhere.

I would look for problems with the outflow— kinked hose, blocked pope, outlet too high above the filter body. Something is preventing the sudden pressure of water from the impeller from escaping out the desired way.

Another thought is that you could also try replacing the main motor head gasket in case the canister is releasing pressure and water when the power goes off. That might reduce the pressure on the clips making them more prone to popping off when the power comes on.

Well, I called Eheim today and they told me that I needed to replace the metal clips. They insisted that was most likely the issue...not sure I’m convinced that’s all it is though.

Wouldn't have thought the metal clips would wear. How old is this filter?

It's about 6 years old, used it for 4 years with no problems. Then we moved so it was taken down and stored for about 1.5 years before I set it up again about 6 months ago. The clips don't feel any different now than what they did when it was new, also feel the same as on my 2215 Eheim. Some feel tight, some feel loose.

Mine always feel loose when there's no pressure in the canister. Once it's running it seals tight and firm against the clips. I think if it's 6 years old you should try replacing the O ring, if that hasn't been done.

Thank you, I will replace the O ring on both of the filters just to be safe. Although I am somewhat scared to try the filter again! Thanks again for your help!

I think it's worth a try. The O ring may have deteriorated, especially if it was stored dry for over a year. Applying O ring lube at intervals extends their life too.

Welcome to dealing with Eheim support. They interrogated me for a week Guantanamo style when my filter failed. I spent hours on the phone and sent 20+ photos. I repeated myself time after time and they just waited me out until I had to buy a new filter. Zero confidence in this garbage customer support function. I hope for your sake you have a better experience, but I will never do business with them again. Filter is great until there's a problem and my experience is you will get zero support. Prep your wallet to buy a filter from a reputable company because Eheim certainly isn't it. 0 points out of 10. It was insulting.
