Cross breeding black rams

Hi
I was wondering if anyone has any experience in cross breeding black rams with other types of rams? I have a black female ram on her own now but have been offered a long fin blue ram, I was wondering if anyone knows how it would turn out or would they just produce regular blue rams?

When crossing different color forms of the same species you usually end up with the normal color form. Such has been the case for me with my BN plecos and I would think the same occurs in other species.

Thank you, I did wonder and think that breeding a long fin with a black female may just result in a normal blue ram, it’s such a shame as I had great success with guppy genetics and transferring their best bits from one to another to produce even better looking fish.

You can easily create more long finned rams, in BN plecos long fins is more of a dominant trait so crossing a long finned with a standard will result in at least some long finned fish. The same may be true for rams.

And if you are looking to get more black rams you should be able to cross the offspring together or back to the mother and possibly get some black rams, even long finned black rams.

Thank you so much for your help, I was wondering about long finned black rams now they would be gorgeous!!

Black rams will produce gbr, yellow rams and electric blue rams naturally when they breed as they are breed from these colour morphs. Similar to cherry shrimp after a while will start the breed other colours. Corey went to the breeder in Israel who developed the black ram. His spawns often produce all sorts of different coloured rams. Very Interesting video you should check it out. Ive also kept these fish, really beautiful!

Like any line bred fish, you can absolutely gain variations, although I'm not versed in the detailed genetics. Breeding different colour morphs will, at least in my experience, typically give a mix of fry. Some will resemble either parent, or be a blend of the two. Black rams carry a particular gene - typically with black or gold ram offspring, or, if both parents carry the gene, all black offspring.
Check out a Facebook page a local guy (to me) runs called The Ram Tank. He goes into detail about this in some posts and/ or comments, and has been breeding numerous fish species for years.
