This Maxi Jet 1200 Mod might be for you if you have a reef tank setup and you're looking to increase the flow rate in your aquarium you will probably be interested in this power head mod review. The Maxi Jet 1200 Mod started in some of the online fish forums around the net and eventually caught on in enough places and is now sold at some of the online fish stores. Using the Eco Mod Pump Modification Kit, this modification is supposed to increase the flow rate of this power head by up to 10 times!
What is this Maxi Jet 1200 Mod exactly? Well, it's a different type of impeller with a prop on it, very much like the propellers seen on boat motors. You take out the impeller that comes with the maxi jet and replace it with the Eco Mod impeller. Place the intake basket over the new impeller with the prop on it and you're ready to go. Well, not exactly. You also should have some way to mount it. Unless you saved the mounting brackets that came with your maxijet power head you may need to also get a mounting bracket for this to work.
There are several different ways to mount this Maxi Jet 1200 Mod. You could get one of the new and cool magnetic mounts that lets you place the power head pretty much anywhere along the glass of the tank. We opted for the Eco Mod kit that comes with everything you need to get up and going. The mod comes with the adjust mounting bracket. This bracket comes in several pieces that allows you to fit it to your aquarium. You can remove half of the bracket (unscrews) if you want to place the power head higher in the tank. We did remove the bottom half of the bracket because the flow of this mod was just too much in the 55 gallon tank we use it in and it was kicking up sand. Higher up in the tank was just right.
We were impressed with the flow rate that this mod gives you and we like the idea of using less power heads in the tank. Too many power heads can distract from the view, use up electricity, heat up the tank water and it means more things to clean at maintenance time. So less power heads makes for a happy fish keeper. The flow rate, while great, doesn't seem to be 10 times though. We didn't test it or measure the flow rate so it could probably be that much of an increase, just doesn't seem like 10 times just by watching the flow rate.
Maxi Jet 1200 Mod Positives
- Relatively inexpensive mod
- Definitely gives a ton of flow from a power head rated at 300 gph. If really increases flow by 10 then the flow rate would be 3,000 gph! In a 55 gallon tank, that is a really good turnover rate.
- One unit could potentially replace 3 or 4 power heads, leading to less energy use, less heat in the tank and a better looking tank with less power heads.
Maxi Jet 1200 Mod Negatives
- Honestly, none come to mind.
