Zucchini-Not Just for Plecos Anymore

Recently, I've discovered some unusual "zucchini-lovers" in some of my tanks.

Amano shrimp-attack it like a buffet!
Blue acara
columbian tetras
Cochu tetras
Bloody Parrots
Rainbow Cichlids
Dwarf Flag Cichlids
Rummynose Tetras
Honduran Red Points
Snails
Guppys
Goldfish

These are just a few and I'll be adding more as I "catch them in the act".

Please feel free to post your "zucchini-lovers" here. It's always fun to discover more species of fish that we can spoil with veggies.

I tried cucumber in my tank the other day for my Pleco and caught the Yellow Lab taking a few nibbles from it

Amano shrimp - Tear at it until all the fibers come loose and it looks all "stringy", the shrimp themselves get a slightly green tinge afterwards.

KuhlI loaches - Nibble time to time, but don't eat too much.

Nerite snails use it as a floor mat wipe their feet (one foot per snail), but don't eat it.

Do we put it in raw or cooked?

I microwave mine in water (technically blanching) until it's all transparent and mushy.

Every time I'm all like "EAT YOUR VEGGIES" to the nerite snails. Needless to say, they never listen. My nerites eat absolutely no plant matter at all.

Same here, it makes the veggies sink so its easier than buying a clip or weighing them down.

Good morning,

I feed raw zucchinI to my fish, it sinks by adding plant anchors into one end of the slice. Link to plant anchors:

I also use these anchors for Romaine lettuce.

The Bloody Parrots love it along with my Silver Dollars and Pleco. The Silver Dollars seem to appreciate the green skin of the zucchinI more than the veggie itself.

Once the Pleco has mad a hole in the slice I usually remove it, chop it up and feed it to everyone in the tank. The same for Romaine lettuce that I feed to my Silver Dollars. The Bloody Parrots love it too!

Good thread BB!

I use my "glass cleaning magnet" for holding zucchinI and lettuce to the side of the tank. It's good to have found a job that it can actually do well, because it certainly doesn't clean glass.

can not wait until I can get some veggies from Mom's garden to try out on my Cherry shrimp and guppies. I tried them with carrots but they did not consider that to be food at all, they did not mind a blanched pea. When fed raw they must have quite a time getting bites of food as it would be a hard/solid texture? They all fight over veggie rounds so blanched zuccinnI should cause quite a brawl.
