Well I was looking at Zebra Plecos on google today and I fell in love with them! I heard they only get to be 5- 7'' would I be able to get 1 for my 46 gallon tank? If not I'm fine with looking at them. I probably can't get one for a while any way there really expensive.

Is this the Zebra Pleco you're wanting?

If so I would think 46g would be fine. They start at $230.00 on aquabid.com. It would be really cool to be able to breed them ut they are too expensive for me

they don't grow too much....if you can find one go for it...if you can afford one, go for it...they are really good looking..

They are also carnivorous.

There are several plecos that look like them that are reasonably priced.

I love the zebras and I plan to have a big tank and a breeding project with them. I am hoping to when I move and I am going to put them in my 29 but we will see. The cheapest I have seen them was $100 each on aqua bid but the catch was that you had to buy a min of 12....Almost bought one until I saw that.

There's more than one species of "zebra pleco", and the other species (not the species everyone is drooling over) are in that $50 price range.

Hahaha, wouldn't it be terrible to pay 200 for a 50 dollar fish.....

You can find them, but you are right can be on the expensive side (though about the same as a large discus so not THAT bad). Ironically, this is my next project I think. Waiting on the possibility of getting a small group of them.

Heres a blast from the past for you. This was before the fish went on the non export list.

The fish itself isn't as "endangered" as people think. The numbers are not to the point of extinction, its the fact that the dam projects down there would prevent them from being collected again in any real regularity, and really damage their habitat. And the Brazil export ban makes it difficult. You can still get wild Zebras, but they will come out of another country to the US instead of Brazil. It can be a grey area that some people choose not to partake in, others don't care as its not illegal for you to buy these fish like it would be if they actually came straight out of Brazil.

Sorry going off on a tangent, lol....I love these fish. Really want some, wanted them since I got in the hobby ~15 years ago.

I feel like we should all chip in and buy one breeding pair, then split the fry amongst ourselves

When I get mine I plan to offer them here first for about half the price after I make back the amount I paid for the original ones.

Problem with Zebra pleco breeding is, it can take years for them to reach breeding age (and those usually are not the ones you see for sale). And then after that, their clutch of eggs is usually small. And that doesn't include any deaths after hatching.

A breeding group would be better then breeding pair.

Id be in for a breeding group I have always liked the look of them.

I've had the L129 mentioned earlier. They hide a lot. Really pretty fish, not good at algae control even though its onivourus and they only get 3". I got mine for $30 about 6 months ago. They are probably the cheapest knockoff of the L46 you can find.

Do you have a picture of your L129 for comparison?
Just curious since the price is so much cheaper than the L46 & if they look much the same......I'm a thinkin' why not the knockoff?

NO where close to looking the same IMO. Clear difference.
