Zebra Danios won't school, why?

I have six zebra danios, 6 tiger barbs, and a red tailed shark. The danios won't school. The barbs are all in unison almost all the time, but the danios are all over the place. Any ideas/explanations?

 

my danios don't school all the time either. I find they only really do when they are excited or scared.

 

Perhaps Samus defeated Mother Brain and all of your Metroids are no longer in sync.

 

Also, they won't school very tightly if the tank is small enough that they can easily see each other.

That's a good point, if they can see each other they will feel like they are already schooled?

I have five Danios and they generally do a very loose school.

Curious, you have a Red Tail Shark in a 20 gallon tank? General thought is at least 36g.

yes I have a red tailed shark. both aquarium stores I go to said 20 gal is ok - you heard 36? It is only an inch and a half, maybe two. I know they can get up to 6 but by then I will upgrade my tank.
