Zebra danio ill in safestart cycling tank

Day 7 of cycling. Placed safestart and added 4 danios. Lost one danio to an injury under his mouth that must have impacted his gills. I now have a danio riding the top of the tank. His movements are slow compared to the other two and he is not sticking with them. His color is dull compared to the other two. I don't have a quarantine tank set up yet. What can I use to treat this, if anything?

This is why most of us recommend fishless cycling. Your fish are probably not doing well because of bad water quality, since your tank is still cycling.

When doing a tss cycle your not to touch the tank unless it is to remove bodies or feed them. The prevention of losses is why a fishless cycle is preferred but the most common thing with new keepers is a fish in cycle. Most Lfs who deal poor info will suggest this method but some will do the right thing and give you things to seed your tank.

Your half way into your cycle three only thing you really can do at this point is get some tupperware or a bucket to quarantine it in but it is just going to stress him further and it might be better to see if he recovers on his own since doing any thing to the water now can mess up your cycle and risk the other 2.

At this point you have 7 days left before you can change any of the water.

I see you have a RTS in there as well. Maybe that may have injured it?

no problem I made the same mistake I lost all but 4 guppies and 2 CAE in my second tank as both times I did a fish in cycle. (no tss I had to order it online.) First tank had no deaths rather a population explosion of guppies it is sitting at about 30 guppies and I'm in the process of assembling a 15 gallon and a 30g. I'm going to relocate many of the fry and juveniles to the 30 gallon once it is cycled going to use decorations and plants from the 10 gallon I currently have up. The 15 will be cycled instantly since the 10 gallon has a fluval 106 on it cycled and waiting to be moved to the 15.

Lost the danio unfortunately. Got a water test kit and did a test. Readings were 8 PH, .25 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites, 40 Nitrates. I know the PH is kind of outside the recommendations(my tap was 7.8!) and the ammonia present isn't great but isn't off the charts either. The other two and the RTS are doing great so far. The RTS hasn't shown any aggression thus far but we'll see.

looks like a good water to put a driftwood into. Or make a cichlid tank with a shame that kit doesn't include a gh and kh test I bet both of those are really high for you.

What besides the fish do you have in there like coral sand or lime stone?

Had one piece of mopanI in the tank and actually just added another piece tonight. I am hoping it eventually helps to lower the PH. I have fake plants and standard aquarium gravel.

My tap also has a Ph of 7.8 right away, but measures 8.0 the next day and forever after. Perfect cichlids water, but really everything seems to be thriving. Stability I think is more important.

That's kind of what I was thinking. If it was atrocious my other fish would have been showing effects. I'll just have to make sure and do slow intros after my tank fully cycles. No Neons for this guy evidently lol.

There's no need to close threads, 173ABN. Though you may have the information you need, someone else may want a bit of clarification on something someone else said, and the thread could help someone other than you. Once a thread is quiet for several months, the forum will close it automatically.
