Yuk! Pellets!

I have never experienced this before with a betta, but suddenly Kleine Bach doesn't like his food. He swims up eagerly to eat when he sees me, I drop some pellets in the water, he takes one, does his cute little chewing thing, and promptly spits it out!

He has been enjoying these pellets for a couple months now (Omega brand), ever since I got him. I dried a dried bloodworm or two, he ate one but I don't think he liked it.

There is no expiry date on the pellets, should I just buy some new ones and try them? Is he mad at me for something?

Thanks for any feedback you guys may have....

Try New Life Spectrum. My fish can't get enough of it. I have Bettas, and the fish in my sig. Everyones goes nuts for it. And they know when I try to give them something different before they even get to it You can buy it at PetCo and PetLand, as well as LFS's, if they decide to.

That is really strange, though. Have you changed his tank up at all since this started, or changed his day/night cycle, or anything?

I recommend NLS brand of pellets or HikarI Betta Bio-Gold. Both are great stables from my experience with bettas.

HikarI Gold foods are actually not much better than the original HikarI foods.

Heres a good link that should help you pick out a food.

Guess its not a great stable. A decent one is more like it by the info. Thanks for the info Akari!

Sure thing! It used to be a good brand, and I still use some of their stuff, like HikarI Fancy Guppy for small fish, but they aren't so great any more, and there are better options, for the price, for me.

According to FLGirl in the link I posted, they changed their recipes, and did not advertise the lower quality ingredients they switched to.

Thanks, Akari, that's a really useful link! Mods, would that be sticky material? It could be helpful to other betta-keepers as well.

this sounds bonkers, but is he spitting out ALL of them or just certain colors? because I had a betta that would never eat anything red. not flakes not pellets not anything. and he wasn't always like that, either; it was later.

lol hikarI is now known as the betta biscut. I belive you should hold onto the omega. Try varying the diet. I use NLS, Attison betta bites(you can't go wrong here), kens krumbles and HBH. Keeping it switched up along with frozen means they don't get tired of it lol. Still I find attison to be perfect, size, shape and the float and sink just right.

Well, I haven't been able to find any of the above mentioned brands in my town, so for the meantime he has been eating the bloodworms. next week I will go to the city, so hopefully I will have some luck there.

Is it harmful to him if all he wants is bloodworms?

I have had bettas that would only eat flake food.

Yes it can be, blood worms are like candy to bettas, they don't have the proper nutrition. Whats worse is that freezedried blood worms can cause bloat, constipation and SBD aswell as your fish can get addicted to them. If all he wants are blood worms then starve him out. fast him for a few days or even a week or so until he will eat the pellets. Its not worth your fish getting sick. Flakes should be soaked and sunk, eaten off the surface may cause the fish to swallow air.

uhoh, I don't want him to get sick! Guess he is about to fast for a while. Poor little guy. I hope he will come back to eating his pellets like a good little fish.
