I have a small ( 1 inch in size) young painted platy female , who just gave birth for the first time. Is it possible that she only had 1 fry?

The little guy has been in the tank for about 2 weeks and none of the adult fish have gone after him. He does know where to hide. I've kept the tank only with ambiant light and have added a ton of greenery . I have heard the : experts " on you tube say not to use a breeding trap with Platies because it stresses them out - Is this true?

I've had a platy give birth to 28 fry in her first drop and only 6 her second drop a few weeks apart (I had moved her to a separate tank as I never wanted fry but it was when I first started fishkeeping and didn't know the sex of the fish I'd gotten). Depends on what's in the tank with them, how well they can hide, and how many fry the mom is holding.

thank yiou for getting back to me on this. Do you think I should put the female in a breeding trap in another tank to have the next group of fry?

I wouldn't. What I read was that they can get more stressed if you move them. They usually give birth early in the morning so just keep an eye on it and remove the fish afterward (or remove the fry, whichever is easiest)

Not always will a livebearer such as a platy deliver multiple fry. It does happen that sometimes just one or two are born. That's quite normal.

I just remove fry to another tank (currently in mystery snail tank) when spotted. breeding traps seem to stress them and even with alot of cover I find the parents get most of fry.
