You ever get paranoia?

So after the big leaky ceiling accident. I've been cautious to prepare and start-over.

Yesterday I refilled the 55 gallon and today added the mixed salt (mixed it in a tub with heater+airstone for 16 hours) and started up the canister filter. This time I knew how to use it so I wouldn't explode all over the floor.

I have both tanks, side by side, (30g and 55g) in my kid's room (second floor). I wanted the big tank in my room but since it gives him so much fun and keeps him busy while I am studying for college I became the big softy and allowed it.

Now I am get the 'itchies', I keep looking up at the ceiling, listening to see if the canister will leak (I eventually couldn't take myself any more and tightly duck-taped all the joints of the tubing) or water rushing sounds or creaking or cracking. I got this entire setup off of craigslist and since it is used (the tank was at least a year old and the canister four months) I am unfamiliar with it and its been so long since I've had a huge tank set-up on the second floor (3 years) and I don't know if you any of you own or seen a 55 gallon but it seems pretty big huge sitting next to the 30g, it actually dwarfs it.

I'm getting paranoia because the leaky ceiling was a minor move the tanks, air out the carpet padding, now if I am not around to know and the canister decides to pop or something I am totally screwed. I don't have the money to fix a house-flood and I'd basically have to seek new housing...which I can't this house was given to me by inheritance.

Does anyone know if there's an alarm system to tell me about leaking water...or I am overreacting?

I have house insurance but it doesn't cover floods...surprising since we are an island nation...I don't live near the coast however...

There is an alarm that is made for flood alerts (such as washer/sewer backups) I have one behind one of my tanks and hopefully it will never, never go off.-it screams or plays music loudly, some I think even contact you if you are away. I had a twenty gallon with a filter that overflowed and went all over my carpet-wet mess, don't want that to happen with my 29gallon-your 55 is way bigger. You can find them at Walmart in the section with the smoke detectors. Hope this helps.

I put my canister inside of a rubbermaid tub, nested inside of a more attractive fabric basket (its visible in my entertainment center). That way, if there is a catastrophic failure of my canister, the rubbermaid tub will hold enough water to drop the tank below the inlet/outlet lines. If the tank fails there isn't a solitary thing you can do...except get a mop.

Lol I don't think that they have a walmart in Japan-correct me if i'm wrong. But like plecodragon said, your local store or hardware store should have one. I too am a bit surprised that they don't offer flood insurance over in your country, especially after that terrible tsunami.

I feel your paranoia, but I doubt that you'll have another incident after all that tape you secured the pipes with tape. What irun said sounds like a pretty solid idea, lol I should do that with my canister.

Yeah I have I plan on putting it in a bin. I've got it under the tank, surrounded in a nest of garbage bags.

There is, as a matter of fact. They make alarms for water on the floor. I'll be looking into them myself pretty soon.

Lol that's awesome, one more reason why I should move there lol, absolutely love Japan. I used to live in SaudI Arabia-with my dad and they had Arabic style McDonald's and KFC.

The Petco is actually called the Pet Company, not shortened, but it has a mix of English and Japanese products. There are a ton of HikarI products of course...
