XL DIY Canister Filter 5 Gallon Bucket $50

I made a canister filter out of a 5 gallon bucket. This is around the same size as an Eheim 2262 that sells for $500. Here is the video if anyone wants to make one and doesn't have enough money to buy a huge canister.

Nice job young man! The only thing I can see happening is that the floss will filter out much of the debris..and THAT will get gunky in about a week, Since you have no shut off valve..(you may want to add that inline)..it will be a pain to maintain. You need to be able to interrupt the siphon. Also..when the initial debris goes through the potscrubbers and lava rock..all the sediment will re-enter the tank from the bottom since you poured the lava rock over the top of the return pump..and it will be spitting out pieces of rock and debris You need more efficient mechanical filtration before it enters tank. . Good thinking however! I'm impressed!

I don't think Eheim has to worry about it just yet...but you are on the right track!

First of all I am a women... I am going to put mechanical filter around the pump intake that already has a screen. The siphon part is not hard at all. I prime it with my other powerhead then when bucket is full I turn the other pump on and I am done. Takes maybe 10 mins to clean. Including rinsing top filter media. I poured the lava rocks in to show the setup quickly on video without cutting the video in half and those will only need to be rinsed maybe once every 6 months. I also have a sponge filter on the intake inside the aquarium. I can also reverse the media inside and make the mechanical part last. No debris went in my tank from the lava rock neither when it was turned on. The canister you linked on ebay is only 264gph mine can be anything. 1200gph pump $30. Also with a brand name canister if something tears up you have to buy a replacement from that company which is expensive.

I didnt mean to offend you. You just sounded young! I am only commenting on the info that you included in your video, I'm sorry that I commented on your project. It was only a recommendation...but I guess you have it all figured out and don't need anyone commenting.

I was just explaining that it is very versatile. I also like the recomendations so that I can tweak things on others opinions. I thought about a valve on the tubing but it's just extra money that I don't need to spend atm. Thank for the info though.

Pretty good basic idea....I just set up a fish room (3 tanks so far, plans for many, many more!) I may try this for a tank and see how it goes. BTW, is the angel in your avI yours?

That's what I was going for, to help people with a basic setup for them to adjust as they need and show that it can be done. Yes the angel is mine. It is my newest angel. I have 3 in a 55 gallon planted but was thinking of getting two more. Would love to have a blue.
