Wow it’s so hard to resist compulsively buying fish

I just saw a convict cichlid pair at my local pet smart that I wanted so badly ;( I couldn’t buy them because I knew it’d be a bad idea to keep a breeding pair of cichlids with julies, calvus, and multies :/ I still want them though. Why is it so hard to not compulsively buy fish??

I often come home with fish I couldn't resist at the shop, then I have the problem of juggling fish around my tanks trying to find a place for the new ones. It's hard when that fish in the corner of a tank at the shop catches your eye and you decide you must have it.

I sadly have a overstocked goldfish tank cause I go in the petstore for food or something and happen to look at the fish and end up getting one lol

Im terrible for it with bettas cause im part of a group in the UK that lists individual bettas (they video the exact fish) and they have sales almost every day and theres just too many pretty ones...

Probably a good thing the LFS isn't as ubiquitous as Starbuck's. It's way too easy to make such purchases when you're already in the store. Same impulse buying tendencies happen with other hobbies, too.

I’ve curbed the addiction with plants and snails. That being said I’m working on a new tank!

Well, this was a bit of an impulse buy, went to get snails and got this instead today!

Was planning on a pleco for the new tank, just not quite this soon. Had to throw my quarantine tank together real quick when i got home since it is probably wild-caught....let's hear it for keeping lots of seeded sponge filters!

That’s certainly impulsive. Very pretty pleco.

The fact that I currently only have one tank can be attributed to an incredible amount of self control and an iron will. I'm still constantly tempted though.

when it comes to impulse buys its plants for me. If i see a plant thats new in the store and Ive been wanting for a while but have no space, I buy it. Plants are an OBSESSION

I am just an impulse buyer in general. My girlfriend doesn’t help, because if we go shopping together and I’m eying something she quite literally tells me to buy everything I look at. Lol.

Luckily every impulse fish purchase I’ve made was one where I knew I had an empty spot available. Every tank can handle just one more snail, so THAT doesn’t help...

Alejandro's issue is impulse fishing...

He wants to go to the peir or beach all the time to catch fish. Then he wants to bring them all home.

That's ok for fish that can be eaten by others but some species are toxic or otherwise resistant to predation so they only accumulate....

I've convinced him we should stop at a few of each species and made exceptions for things like herring that school, but I can't ever get him to give up a new fish he's never seen.

His only limit seems to be how many species of fish there are in the ocean - that is a little worrying as I'm sure it's a lot more than he currently has.

I always buy way too many plants, at this point I don't even have space for the new ones I bought this week. I think my tank is slowly turning into a jungle lol

L129, seen names for it such as false zebra pleco, colombian zebra pleco, chocolate zebra pleco. It was still in the bag from the supplier and Petco was still floating the bag, so i got to learn how to decode the label! It was labelled as "Zebra Brown Pleco L129"

This is why I buy big tanks for community tanks. Low stock at first and whenever you see something you like get it. But once your tank is fully stocked we run into a problem lol.

The shocker was it was reasonably priced. I honestly figured it was going to be 2 or 3 times higher than it was...so when he told me the price it was an easy decision

I got that exact same pleco L129 also as an impulse, it was so attractive! A pity it is so very shy and I rarely see it. I don’t usually buy fish on impulse, normally I research what I want first....and then find out what I want is not available anywhere here!

Oh my gosh....Yes!! This is me!!! The struggle is REAL!!!

My only saving grace is that my wife gives me a hard time when I purchase things a lot...she keeps me honest. If I had a spouse who was even a little into this hobby, I'd probably have to join a self-help group!!

Compulsive fish buyers UNITE!!!

Yeah, it hasn't come out of its log since that pic was taken. So i am figuring it will be fairly shy when it comes out of quarantine, too

I impulsively bought this pretty little 1.5 inch guy.

20210401_204428.jpg
Two years later he grew to be this 10.5 inch monster. He also developed a really sharp set of teeth.

20210401_204343.jpg
I eventually traded him. Learned my lesson, Lol.

Is that a flowerhorn? Never seen a green one.

Yes pet stores are dangerous places

About what it is now, 3-4" or so

Planning on it for my 45, but it could easily go in the 29 as well.

He is an unfaded Red Texas Cichlid hybrid. Probably a Texas Cichlid × Midas or Trimac mix.

Yeah, I know if I go to the LFS there is a large risk of coming home with fish.

It's not just at the stores I get tempted, I have been buying fish online since the covid situation started. I use tropco.co.uk for batches of fish but because the shipping costs are quite high but the fish are cheap I feel the need to buy more fish than I need to get a better deal. Each time I add to my school of pinstripe butterfly plecs, I now have 7 of them in one community tank and more in other tanks.
Their website is like to a fish need.
