hI

so i'm thinking about ordering 3 firebelly toads from where I work at a local pet store for myself.
I was thinking i'd use my old 29 gallon fish tank
or maybe just buying a 20-15 gallon reptile tank from my work
would this set up be okay?:
regular aquarium substrate gravel
rocks from the great miami river
driftwood from miami river (all 3 have been boiled and cleaned with dawn with bleach)
dear antlers on the land?
a water fall
a 5-10 gallon fish tank filter for my idea below:

I was thinking in the water section having some live plants, I need some ideas for what
maybe a 1 male betta? (my biggest question)
feeder guppies
caves
a small enough heater for the water (was thinking of making my tank 40 land 60 water) 4 inches deep maybe (depending on my main question), ghost shrimp?
and maybe fire belly newts?

would this idea work?
i'd like to know some sort of fish I could put with my frogs when I get em

let me know whatcha guys think x:-\:;hurryb

Please don't use soap on things that are to go in your tank. It's very hard to get off and will kill youf fish if it's not all off. the dear antlers will dissolve in the water and will change your water parameters.
Sorry I don't know anything about toads so I can't help

Welcome to FishLore!!

I don't know much about firebelly toads, but don't they eat fish?
If so, I wouldn't consider any compatible.

Other things to think about, isn't there a toxin on their skin?
I also think their habitat is much different than most fish.

Bettas don't make very good tank mates. Imo, it would be best in a 5 gallon tank by it's self.
Here's our

I hope someone else chimes in, as I said, I don't really know much about them.

Well, as for using Dawn Detergent for soap, I agree with you here.

Many people don't like to use soap in any kind of animal setting, especially not fishtanks, but I would be ok with it. I use Dawn when I do complete tank cleanings (about one a month) and I ONLY use it because I know HOW to use it. That, and Dawn detergent is the safest product to use on animals. Dawn is often used on marine mammals and birds during oil spills because it is harmless to their skin and natural oils.

The main concern of course is making sure the soap is completely rinsed off. When I use it in my fish tanks, I use the highly concentrated (a little goes a long way) version of Dawn Origional, and I repeatedly rinse/wash my tank with hot water after the scrubbing to make sure that no bubbles form.

Although many people don't approve, if you do it right, there isn't a problem with using Dawn.

First, DO NOT use soap for anything.

Second, do NOT use gravel rocks for the LAND section...there will be a strong chance your frog will eat it. (they cannot extend their tongues) so they would choke and die a long.... long, death.

Third, guppies and other fish are great as long as they are a decent size bigger then his mouth. I would NOT do a betta fish as I could garauntee it's fins attracting a fire belly toad into niping it to death.

Fourth, do not get very nippy fish as they will nip the toad and die from its poisons.

AND I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH
If you have a 30 gallon tank with say 20 gallons of water... get a 30 gallon filter AT LEAST... keep in mind your frogs will be pooping and peeing in the water along with your fish... so a much bigger filter then needed should be used... (I have 5 gallon tank with 3 gallons water and a 15 gallon filter!)

P.S. you may use gravel rocks for the underwater part of the tank if you are doing a terrarium, since the frog will not eat there. Here is a video of my 5 gallon terrarium as an example. (1 fire belly toad, 3 neon tetras, and a filter meant for 15 gallon tanks)
