If I restrict the water flow from the output end of a powerhead, would that really reduce the life of the unit? What if I restrict flow from the intake?

I restrict the output of powerheads (or submersible water pumps) to adjust flow, no problem whatsoever. It will not harm your powerhead as long as you use some tipe of valve (I use PVC/C-PVC ball valves) and let some water return back (usually through a "T" connector) to where the pump is (at least if the restriction is considerable, a small reduction wouldn't require this).

Restricting the intake is likely to harm most powerheads.

Thanks for the replies . It doesn't have a flow adjustment control, which is why I need to slow down the output (way too powerful).
