Would plants benefit from gradual lighting... As in 5*10 watt bulbs and somthing like this happening

hour ........ # of bulbs on
    1rst hour - 1
    2nd hour -2
    3rd hour - 2
    4rth hour -3
    5th hour -3
    6th hour -4
    7th hour - 5
    8th hour - 5
    9th hour -4
    10th hour -3
    11th hour -3
    12th hour -2
    13th hour -2
    14th hour -1

This would simulate the sun more I believe... Any thoughts?

Some people use a "noon time burst" to simulate peak hours of light but I am not really sure that there is much added benefit in doing so. Thats alot of bulbs you are running there! What kind of lighting is it? T-5?

I'm not running it yet but planning on it. Their 10 watt aquarium compact florescent full spectrum bulbs. I know peak times is quite a bit of light but I plan on growing Glosso and HC (dwarf baby tears) so I believe they will be happy that way.

I think I will have a small patio that provides "shade" for the low light plants in the tank and possibly the fish that want a break from the light.

There's not really any benefit to the plants. All you need to make sure of is that they recieve at least 8hrs of intense enough light each day. Other than that, the plants couldn't care less. The cycle of the light is more for the fishes benefit. So that they arn't in the dark one second & then getting hammered by light from 4 tubes or whatever the next second. You could speed that graduation up to tubes going on & off every 30min to give a longer high intensity middle period.

What size tank are you thinking?
