Would Changing Filter Cartridges This Way Keep My Bacteria?

So my HOB filter holds up to 2 cartridges in the filter. My solution to changing cartridges is by keeping one cartridge and replacing the other. That way one cartridge keeps the beneficial bacteria, and the other one can start building its own. After a week or 2, I would replace the other cartridge as the new one I put in should of built up some bacteria at this point. Good idea? I know I could just clean, but would this work?

Don't toss the cartridges unless they are literally falling apart.

Even then, don't use cartridges as they are costly. Just put a piece of sponge in front of the old ratty cartridge for 2 weeks. Lasts longer and costs a lot less than cartridges do.

didn't know I could do that. Guess, I'll try it when I need to change.

Also the problem with your method is that your loosing 50% of the BB. If you have low bioload that is fine. But if you have a stocking which needs 100% BB then you will run into problems.

true, how about this? What if I just put my new cartridge in tank water for a week or more and then switch it out?

Lose the cartridges all together. Next time you do a water change, cut the cartridge open in old tank water, and just keep the cloth material. Put that cloth back in your filter along with some new media(sponges, and ceramic).

Best way I have found with cartridge filters is just to put a new cartridge in front of the old one and put the one that is falling apart behind it.
