Worried About Serpea Tetra Aggression

Hello, for the past few years I told my parents that my dream fish for my tank would be a Serpea Tetra. Well today they actually got me 2 of them. I was very happy but I did know about the aggression and fin nipping issue that they have. My tank has a variety of fish. I have many guppies, a Dwarf Gourami, some Oto cats, Cory cats, clown pleco, and some Amano Shrimp. My tank is a 75 gal and is heavily planted. So far the two Serpeas that I have haven’t nipped any fins yet and are quit peaceful... so far. I wanted to get some more since they school. But I’m worried about my guppies get harassed. My plan was to get 2-3 more to calm aggression. Thanks for any help

 

Yes just add 3 more and they'll take it out on each other. They should always be kept in schools of 5 or more. Same goes for red eye tetras

If you're looking for nice schooling fish go with the rummy nose tetras. By far my favorite schooling fish. They keep it nice and tight when schooling together and if your water is bad their color nose are no longer red.

 

Get as many more as you can handle without overstocking your tank. They are a super fun tetra that has a bad reputation for aggression, but are not actually aggressive, just prone to fin nipping in their social interactions. Having a larger school of them keeps the nipping contained to just the serpaes themselves, and then you get to enjoy their funky personalities.
