Wood From Home Improvement Stores In Aquarium?

I'm not sure where to put this thread, so I hope this is an acceptable place.

I want to build a fishing pier type of decor for my tank, and I figured the easiest way to do this would be to use wood I could buy for cheap at a home improvement store, making cutting the planks and supports for the pier very easy. Is there any wood (obviously not the PT variety) that would last underwater in an aquarium?

I'm sure there are plenty of pier decorations made of plastic I could buy, but I'd really like to make one of my own using real wood if possible. I could buy a bunch of actual driftwood and attempt to cut it into pieces but that would be far more expensive and not really worth doing.

Has anyone ever tried this?

I don't know if that would be a good idea, wood from the hardware store isn't coated with fish safe stuff, and is often put into contact with harmful chemicals

Never done it so not sure. But as said above I don’t think it’s wise. Even fresh cut wood itself could release stuff into the water. Maybe visit a nearby lake and pick up some driftwood and cut that down. More work but if the woods been in the lake I would think it good to go.

Also, before you collect driftwood from a lake, make sure it is legal in your area.

I live in an area that's very densely populated, so lakes are maintained constantly. They're all very "clean" especially around the perimeter. There's only one somewhat large lake but it's full of countless alligators and I'm not about to go find one lol.

I'd only build what I want to build if I could buy some really cheap wood, guess I'll have to research further or maybe be stupid and test it out myself.
