I just bought water lilly bulbs. one of them keeps floating to the top of the tank, How do i keep it planted and make it stay down. Also how can i tell which way is up or down, im not sure whatever is coming out of it is stems or roots?

Just let it float until it sprouts. If it doesn't, you've got a dud.

I've never seen one float. I suspect it's a dud already, but floating it wont hurt unless its rotting.

The smell of a rotting bulb is similar to the smell of dental plaque mixed with dead snail. Its not pleasant but is easily recognizable.

ok, thanks for that. Also is there an up or down with a lily bulb or just dropping it in the tank is good?

There is. Best bet is to drop it in and check after a week. If it's got roots those go down. Generally, the bulb will figure it out itself though.

Thank you! so far the one that's floating does not give off any smell, so i'm hoping its still good. But we'll wait and see.

I highly doubt it's still viable, but like I said, it's not hurting anything. It kind of irks me a bit that the big box stores dont sell sprouted bulbs in the water. They ship pretty well and would increase success rates drastically. I planted a 3 pack once, none of them made it. I've never lost a bulb that had growth when I bought it though.
