Will this harm my cycled tank?

Hello everyone!

I currently have two Emperor 400's and I put one on each 75 gallon tank. I plan on upping the filtration soon but that's not the question(s) at hand.

I have two 75 gallon tanks, one that is now compeltely cycled and one that has had Tetra Safe Start added to it last evening.

First question is should I see readings on my API test kit of anything yet after Safestart only being in for 1 day? I added de-chlorinator waited about 45 minutes and then added the safe start checked the water today and there was no findings. All 0.

Second question is if I take one of the two bio wheels off of the cycled tank and put it on the tank I have added safe start to, will this harm my cycled tank (Adding a non cycled bio wheel to it and taking a cycled one)?

Thanks!

Are you supposed to use dechlorinator with TSS? What do the directions say? I've never used it (and never will), just asking.

Don't bother using the biowheel. It will remove 50% of the bb from your existing tank, although it doesn't take it long to readjust but still. You could've just used that biowheel without the TSS on the new tank.

My theory is to pick one method of cycling and stick with that one method.

TSS should be used with dechlorinator, just not prime. You need to use a plain dechlorinator and not something that binds ammonia. If you use prime I'd wait at least a day to add TSS.

I don't think the biowheels would remove 50% of his BB from the existing tank. I've had a couple of emperor 400's before. They have a pretty large media storage section. Also, I don't think the biowheels are so effective as to contain 50% of the total BB colony.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with adding both seeded media and TSS, I've done it before and it worked well for me. I don't know if this is the "correct" way to go about it but I've had success in the past with that method.

LOL thanks guys. If were sticking to what works... I put my fish in there before I even started cycling my tank that's now fully cycled and had zero dead fish. I know better than to do that again but they seen pretty hardy. I'm fairly certain I've just dumped 20$ worth of tss down the drain since I did add prime before adding tss. Oh well.. guess ill just have to try to seed with media and try the biowheel out. I'll keep a close eye on the tank and see how things go.

Thanks!

You are supposed to wait 24 hours between using any dechlorinator and adding SafeStart.

When using SafeStart you need to add fish at the same time, since the bacteria in the SafeStart needs the ammonia to feed it.

thanks Jd, I may pick up some more today and try again. It's worth knowing my fish will be ok
