Will Power Outage Cause Canister Filter To Leak?

Looking at buying a canister filter today. I’m getting either fluval 206 or ehihm c220. I’ve read some stuff online saying canisters will leak on the floor if there’s a power outage is this true ?

Sorry, never heard of that. If you found one that does leak on a power failure... it's just broke.

I run an Eheim Pro4+ cannister on my tank & have never had any leaks from it even during power cuts, the cannister is sealed so I don't know where it could leak from.

Are you sure your not mistaking a sump with a canister filter?

If you're going for Fluval, wait for the 207.
They've made some nice improvements to the 07 series.

Did you mean Marineland C220?

What size is your tank? The Eheim 220 is an internal filter by the way not a cannister.

yes he marineland my bad
Never had a Marineland but I've just been reading some reviews for the c220 & going off them I wouldn't touch it, I recommend Eheim, I've used a number of them (internal & cannister) & never had a single problem but if you have to chose between the Fluval & Marineland I'd go with the Fluval.

I would think if the outage was causing the canister to leak because of poor maintenance. If you don’t clean your canisters you increase the internal pressure to the point it can warp the O rings. It works fine under the pressure but once there is no longer the pressure to hold the now warped O ring it will leak. The same thing happens when someone cleans their canister and then it leaks out of the screws. Just make sure to maintain the canister and not let stuff build up in it. If you have a heavily stocked tank crack open the canister once a month and rinse all the out of the sponges.

bgclarke has a good point.

If possible, either wait for the x07 model to come out next month (already released in the U.K. a few weeks ago) and pick one up, or buy a discounted x06 model that is clearanced to get rid of stock.

If you need to pick one up now, also cross shop the Eheim 2215 classic
