Will My Blue Gourami Survive?

image.jpg I just set up my new 20 gallon long about 36 hours ago. I have 1 male blue gourami that is 6 years old in a 10 gallon tank. My dad says when he was a kid that he would put fish in right away and not wait for the nitrogen cycle and that I don't have to wait either. I am a little sceptical because I don't know if he could survive that because my gourami is old. Because I am just putting my gourami in that tank can I put him in now? Will the amount of ammonia my gourami produces be little enough so I don't have to do water changes every day? I have one tank decoration from the 10 gallon in my new 20 gallon. Thanks for any input!

HI & welcome to Fishlore
If the filter from your 10 gallon is cycled & you're not adding any new fish then you can just move the filter & your Gourami into the new tank, the filter already has enough BB to process the Gourami bioload.
If you are going to add new fish once the Gourami has settled in then add them slowly to allow the BB to adjust to the extra bioload

Thanks for the response. My filter for the 10 gallon is up to 10 gallons so I had to get a new filter that doesn't have the same filter cartridge.

Is there any way you could stuff some of the old media into the new filter?
Or you could run the old filter alongside the new one for a few weeks to seed the new one

I go try to do that and see if it works. If not do you think he would still be fine? I'm kinda anxious to get him in there!

Keep a close eye on the water stats & do waterchanges accordingly but hopefully he should be fine as he's the only fish going in.
Keep us posted on how he's doing
