I'll be putting dirt in my established 55 gallon and was wondering if my BB will be able to survive in my filters for about 4-5 hours? Should I just leave them on the side of the tank as I take out the sand and put in the dirt and cap it up or should I put them in a bucket of water? One is a canister filter so it will be full of water the other two are HOBs.

put some tank water in a bucket and put your HOB filters in there. (Not the actual filtration unit)

Four or five hours is pushing it. I would keep the media wet.

I would assume that you are going to siphon done tank water out to put the new substrate down. Then you can just put the filter media from your HOBs in with the old tank water.

Your bacteria will be fine for a few hours as long as you keep it wet, put it in a bucket with tank water & run an airstone while you change your substrate
