Will Assassin Snails kill larger snails?

Hello Fish Community !

I have currently a Mystery Snail explosion in my tank, they just keep mating. ( im ok with a few but not 100s ). I purchased some Assassin snails from AquticArts.com and also went to my local pet store to get more info on maybe keeping a tank just of snails. I was informed that the Assassin snails will go after the bigger adult mystery snails an kill them. Which i do not want. When i purchased the assassin snails the page info for them said they will not go after snails that are bigger then them. So i dont know what to do now, i have 3 assassin snails and im afraid to put them in the tank. Is this true that they will kill the larger adult mystery's ?

They can team up and hunt the larger ones but they will probably go after the easier to catch babies.

They will only go after bigger snails if they have no other food to eat or catch.

Well 3 snails will take awhile if you have tons of little snails. Have you been removing the clutches so you dont get any more?

No the first clutch hatched a few weeks back while i was on my honeymoon, removed what was left. and the one thats new just fell into the water sometime yesterday to today.

This would be the perfect justification to get another tank and put a nice puffer in it. Then just keep feeding snails to the puff. My mysteries are not breeding fast enough so they are rare treats.

I have 3 in my aquarium with lots of mystery snails; they are killing off the small pest snails and a few of the tiny mystery snails (I have the same probably you have with mystery snails); but they have not yet gone after even the modest (1/4 inch) size mystery snails or the larger mystery snails. I have heard that they can gain up on them but have not yet found any dead mystery snails of any size.

Btw aquahuna sell assassin snail and have an advantage of most places of relatively cheap shipping.

Oh one more thing I can't even get my larger clown loaches to eat mystery snails (they are around 6 inches); I am now looking for a magic wand to get wave all my mystery snails away...

My Scarlet Badis loves crushed snails also. ;)

I dont think 3 assissan are going to do anything with that amount of snails, they don't kill for the fun of it so your other snails will just drown them in snails,
They won't eat the small and won't eat the large
You need to manually remove some to get a happy medium

I wouldnt worry about putting them in there. Like I said 3 assassins wont take the population down fast enough to worry about. They are snails still...lol slowwww.

I guess I don't understand. Mystery snails are the easiest snails to keep the numbers down. Just remove and dispose of the clutches of eggs. Unlike other snails that lay eggs under water and on everything in the tank mystery snails lay big clutches of eggs above the water line. Simply remove the clutches and there will be no baby mystery snails.

You can do a better job of keeping the snail population down than the assassin snails will. Just don't allow the clutches of eggs to hatch. You normally have at least 2 weeks before a clutch hatches so plenty of time to find and remove the clutch.
