Will AquaClear 50 impeller work on AquaClear 30?

HI there,

I have an AquaClear 30 HOB but I feel the flow rate is pretty low so I would like to improve it.

Can an AquaClear 50 impeller work on the AquaClear 30 model?

Thanks for any help.

if the propeller unit fits into the plastic housing of the 30, then the filter will work, however you may need to remove some filter media from the unit. since more media will make the water level inside the HOB higher. I suspect the extra flow power will cause it to overflow.

If it will fit, it can be done. I would personally suggest against it though. You find many people actually downgrading their impellers - this is the first I've seen of someone wanting to upgrade it. The most important part of your filtration is going to be the bio-media.... the more time your beneficial bacteria has to do its job before the water moves on, the better off you are. So most people at least use the adjustable flow to slow it down.

Hi, welcome to Fishlore

Assuming they are exactly the same size, and the only difference is the impeller blade, then yes, probably it will still work.

If they are physically different, it may not work, or may shorten the life of the filter. The magnets etc are all designed for a certain rotating mass.

The other thing you need to consider is the filter itself, and if the tubes, overflows etc can handle the extra flow.

If all you're after is extra flow in the tank itself, I'd be inclined just to add a powerhead - they cost just as much as a new impeller

If you're after higher flow through the filter, I'd suggest a bigger filter designed for the flow, and you can take advantage of more media

Too, what size tank, and stock? The filter you have may just perfect for what you have.

The tank is: 48" x 18" x 20" (LxWxH) or 120cm x 45cm x 50cm

I have only just got the tank and haven't set it up yet .. I already have two HOBs at home so I would like to use these but add more flow to the aquarium (I will have goldfish in the tank - only small but they should get bigger). The tank will have 6 small white clouds and maybe 3 small fancy fantail goldfish.

I also have a SunSun canister filter that I will be using in the new tank which produces 1000lph.

I don't know if the AquaClear 30 will be enough?

BTW I am from Australia too
