will an RO/DI unit pruify well water?

hello, I am thinking about getting an RO/dI unit and I was wondering if it would pruify well water so that you could use the pruifyed water for top off and water changes. if so what kind of filtration units would I put in to the unit?

It all depends on the quality of your water. My well water here in central Ohio is so hard that it just plugs up the ro unit in a very short time.

If you know what you water parameters are, these guys can tell you if an RO unit is workable for you...

Since RO wouldn't work for me, I started collecting rain water!

Well when I first started out, I just filled 5 gallon buckets from the down spout. As my collection of tanks grew, I diverted water from the down spout into a 32 gallon rubbermaid trash can... then 2 cans, then 3 cans.

Currently, I've got five 32 gallon trash cans daisy-chained together and plumbed into a 1/3 hp electric water pump. The pump pushes the water through a carbon block and .5 micron filter before filling an 80 gallon container on the top shelf of one of my tank racks. I then just gravity feed water into any of the aquariums.

I'm not happy with the trash cans and was just looking at stock tanks over at TSC this afternoon. I'd like to have about 300 gallons of rain water storage.

Have your well water tested then decide on doing RO/DI or not most wells pull up a lot of unwanted debris and contaminents that will clogg filters up faster then you will be buying cartridges for RO unit more frequently. As for roof run off collection if you have shingled roof this is very bad because shingles on a roof have petroleum based products in manufacturing and does bleed oo of shingles that would be like pousining your water with oil! Even galvanized roofs do leach out metals etc. into water so be very careful of this! You can end up poising your critters.

RO/DI can certainly be used to get pure water from well water. A friend of mine used a DI stage first, then once the water was softened, he made it go through a four stage RO/DI filter.

Membranes life can be extended by keeping the system working within the factory suggested pressure range. The use of additional pump and valves is usually required.

ok so he kinda reversed it or are ro's like that where the dI is first

Good morning.

I had an RO unit a while back. My water pressure (well water) wasn't strong enough for the unit to be beneficial. This is something you need to consider.

how do you make the water pressure at the right level, I have a big air tank for that stuff it is like 5 foot tall but I am still not sure about my water presure, but what kind of Ro filtration untI should I get??

my water was off the charts here....hard well over 8.4...and white crust everywhere. So being real smart I decides I like SA fish...tetras and apisto's!!!!

I tried softening...ph dpwn...whatever was out there. Vinegar to make acidity(it does work ... organice...safe etc...but don't bother).

Finally found a counter top RO water filter!!! it works!!! Ph 6.0 easy..I now actually add 1 gallon of tap to 5 gallons of RO for a Ph of 6.6!!!! Time to change the filters...approx $85.00....still cheaper and safer than all the other stuff I would have to buy!!

ps. the filter was $250...with my water pressure I get approx 6 gal an hour....it is rated at 9 per hour at 90 lbs pressure.

so the dI softens the water??? what if I put a single sediment filter first then the 5 stage ro or 4 stage and then the DI?

D/I means Deionized It polishes the water after reverse osmosis.
