Will a torn up fancy guppy's tail (male) heal?

I was moving a few guppies today, I just have the one male Blue Japan, so beautiful, and some females. As I placed them into a bag, all 3 females went in easy, but he gave a good kick and ended up on a towel. I did my best to pick him up carefully, but when he went into the water, his tail was tattered. Do they regenerate or heal? I'm so upset!

Yes, they should heal and grow back. Adding a couple water changes a week and using stresscoat as your conditioner for awhile should help it heal and grow back.

They usually grow back but most of the time, it won't get its color back.

That's sad, but mostly good. He just seems to be struggling to keep his balance, much like me at times! I put a female in with him 3 months ago who isn't the same variety, but her momma was blue and her tail is so pretty. She's never had babies but could be waiting now. I've never had a male and female together that didn't conceive quickly. Then I had 2 female fry from another blue Japan who were the only survivors of 2 drops, and the oldest of them seems to be pregnant now. I don't want overwhelmed with numbers, but I love their beauty! This variety has eaten fry like no others I've had.

It's a very individual thing wether a guppy will eat their fry or not. Most of my abino koi guppies will eat their fry if they get the chance. But in general, most of my guppies will leave those fry alone.
Not all paired up guppies will reproduce quite quickly. Most will but not all do. That's quite normal.

Thanks for that! They go through the rituals, she's never had young before, I thought it would happen. The other female seems to be larger after 3 weeks in there, although she already had a rather large and dark gravid spot, with no males in the other tank. Many of my females never touched their young. I put one into an empty (but cycled) 10 gallon tank the night before she dropped, and I swear there were 60 fry, never saw so many. I actually wouldn't have minded her snacking on half of them! lol I saw her chasing after, but not aggressively. Sadly she died the next day, I know all those young took a toll on her.

Patiently waiting, just hoping I don't lose this male before new ones arrive - I haven't had much luck with 1st generation fancy guppies lasting too long. LOTS of floating plants in the 20 gallon I put them into, and places on the bottom to hide, I feel good about survivors. I'd like to move the one out that isn't pure to variety before she drops, to separate them... IF she drops!

Well hopefully, you've got more luck with your guppies from now on...

All was well until lately. This has not been my summer in so many ways!

If it makes you feel better, I think we all have similar experience with 1st generation fish from the LFS. I have very few left, just some more recent additions. The good news is, at least in my experience, the following generations are way tougher.
