wild caught fish?

Hi. After much discussion about the next fish to purchase for our tank, we decided on 2-3 corys. I went to the fish store only to find that most of the corys were listed as "wild caught" and once again I felt unsure so didn't pick them up. A whole new factor to add to our beginner confusion...

Is this normal? Are there any issues we should be aware of in purchasing wild vs tank bred freshwater fish? We'll be putting them in with 2 full grown and one baby platy. Not sure if wild are heartier, or not, if there are aggression issues we should be aware of. Or am I now overthinking every single thing and should just get what they have available?

I don't know about aggression or anything like that vrs tank bred but one thing to consider about wild fish is they may harbour disease and or parasites so should be quarentined.

I did think about putting this in the cory section, but although it's cories I was going to buy that day, I'm wondering more in general about whether it's a good idea to buy wild caught fish of any sort. At least of the pretty standard types of freshwater fish we're likely to be purchasing in the near future.
Sorry for any confusion.

Usually wild caught fish are more prone to diseases and are unlikely to eat...

HI Gibber,
Some species do not breed as great in the aquarium as others. Allot of species are wild caught. Corys, ottos, puffers and many others..Since they are wild caught I would def. put them in quarantine for 2 weeks and see how they act because they could be carrying a parasite. Allot of cory's you see at the LFS are wild caught they just don't post it like this one did. Some species are hard to feed if they are wild caught, the ones who are used to eating live food..Cory's however should do just fine. I think that you are safe to buy these and just quarantine them, but you should do that with all fish, not just wild caught. Good luck, and if you have anymore questions just ask..

ah ok no problem, also with wild they are not always ''wild'' but bred from wild stock, the reason for this is that there is less chance of deformaties (sp) and interbreeding, definetly quarantine first.

I don't think there's much of a difference other than the risk of disease.

If the LFS states "wild caught' they must be caught from their natural habitat.
Wild caught fish are more sensitive to water parameters so the water must be kept as close to perfect as possible. Wild caught fish aren't fed before shipping so some times they go so long without eating they sometimes either won't eat or are unable to digest their food due to the flora in the stomach have died, so you will have a larger chance of loss. This is what happens with Otos many times. They can as was stated also bring parasites in.
The advantage to wild caught fish is that they are usually more colorful and better examples of their kind of fish. Some types of fish are so over interbred that they look nothing like their wild cousins.
The advantage of tank raised is that they are more acclimated to living in a closed system and have learned to eat just about anything. Tank raised also doesn't deplete endangered species.
Just some thoughts

thanks all for the input. guess we'll have to get a quarantine tank set-up then cuz I'm kinda dying to get the cories. This fish thing is both a lot more fun and more complicated than I had imagined.

thanks for that info Carol - I was writing my response while you sent yours so just saw it. do you happen to know out of curiosity if the rules are the same in canada? i'm going to look around and see if I can find tank-bred cories somewhere else around here and then decide what to do. if wild are the only option I have then there isn't much point worrying about it I suppose.

Pretty much Wild caught means just that... wild caught. When breeding wild caught fish the first successful spawning results in F1 babies (1st fillial generation ) matings between f1's get you F2. Am I confusing you yet

MTS = Multiple Tank Syndrome
