Wild betta mahachai

I plan on getting a betta mahachaI I read somewhere that they are not as aggressive as male domestic betta. So could I keep a male betta mahachaI with a regular female splenden or would that be a bad idea?

 

I wouldn't recommend it. Less aggressive is still agressive, plus he would likely chase her constantly trying to breed.

But they are different species why would he breed. Thank you for the reply I will just buy another tank.

 

Even if they are of different species they still can interbreed. Most of the current betta splendens are a result of interbreeding wild types to get various colourations. It is possible to keep a mahachaI pair together if the tank is large enough and has a lot of hiding places.

Make sure you also look into other peoples experiences and opinions and such keeping them together. I know a lot of people (myself included) are of the opinion that bettas as a whole shouldn't be kept together long term while others report perfect success. Also keep in mind that some individuals are more aggressive than others- it may work with one pair but not another, so you may want to have a back up just in case things go south.
