Why So Fat?? Zebra Danio

Does this Zebra Danio look eggy to anyone? Or is it something more sinister? I'm asking because I have had cases of dropsy in that tank before, which I haven't had in a while after doing some good maintenance on the tank, it's made me a bit paranoid. Is this an eggy female, just a fat fish, or is it dropsy making itself known?

I think this one in particular was always a bit larger, but has become considerably fatter since I bought them not that long ago.

Are the scales sticking out at all? Sort of like a pinecone?

No, but I've also had fish die from what I can only assume is dropsy without pinecone scales. But the scales are fine, it's still eating well, and acting like a hyperactive little fishy in proper danios fashion. What do you think?

Looks like mine before they lay eggs. It is fun to watch when the are laying because all the other ones eat the eggs so there is a long line of danios chasing her.

What makes you think it's Dropsy if they weren't pineconing? Personally, I think she looks more eggy, but my eyes aren't the best

Thank you! If it only looks like eggs, I'll just keep an eye on her. I've never kept danios before.

I've had a guppy in that tank that got increasingly oversized, lethargic, without eating. She was also completely the wrong shape to simply be gravid. Then she turned up dead. I don't really know what else to attribute that to, still sounds a lot like dropsy to me. But if you guys think that this is just an eggy female, that puts my mind at ease. I'll still watch her closely anyways.

That was probably a tumor or an ectopic pregnancy or something. Dropsy is kidney failure, and just from experience, it tends to be more uniform. One side may buldge slightly more than the other, but it's not normally that obvious. Just my 2¢. Sorry for your loss.

It's ok, it was a while ago now. But that is interesting. I've never had a fish die from something like that... Well I hope my danios stay for a lovely long time!

I don't really know why she died. But it was a while ago now. Also would you believe that these danios are happily coexisting with my massive angelfish in the tank? The angelfish likes to 'chase' new fish around the tank to re-establish the pecking order, but when I put the danios in, there were too many and they were moving too fast! She really wanted to try, but gave up pretty quickly, and they've been living together normally ever since.

That's great! Glad it's working out for you!
I think a lot of stocking possibilities are overlooked because there's just one story out there about it going wrong. For example, my goldfish get along great with amano shrimp.

Nice! I think sometimes you can just try it, and if they don't get along, you can most likely move the fish, take it/them back, or give them to a friend. And sometimes you just have an awful fish in particular. I've got a swordtail who is absolutely awful to everyone when she's pregnant, but I see people recommending swordtail a with lots of different species.

I have a zebra danio that looks just like that. He has been like it for a while and the rest of them look normal. I don’t know what it is but it looks kinda funny!

After taking a closer look at the pictures mine is a little skinnier than that. Does yours behave normally? Mine swims around with the rest of the school and acts completely normal.

My females look kinda like that right before they lay eggs. Then they go skinny again.

it looks to me like its carrying some eggs! nothing to worry about unless the other danios all look the same which means that you are probably overfeeding in that case.

That fish is bloated or constipated, but it's not full of eggs. They don't get anywhere near that big from eggs.

That danio looks like it's expecting some eggs soon. I don't think I've ever seen a danio fat like that from food.

It behaves normal and swims with the school

Thats bloat. Looking on how fat the fish is across you can assume it goes much farther down as well. Eggy females do get fat, but not to this extent.

Then it’s probably not severe.

What can I do to get rid of their bloat?
