Why is the hobby so addicting for you?

Y'know, when I got into fishkeeping, I bought a 75 gallon (yep, my first tank!) because it was cheeeeeap and I always remembered loving my mom's fish - in fact, part of the reason I bought it was because I wanted to give poor Ms. Fish, my mom's last angelfish whose mate Mr. Fish had died - a nicer home than the 20 gallon she was currently living in. Sadly, Ms. Fish didn't have much left in her (hole in the head I think, died while using medicine which I think had gone bad because it was underdosed and killed all the fish ) ... but my tank is still running. After the incident we raised livebearers for a little while, then some Red Eared Sliders ... now we're back to livebearers though our little troop of cories have survived everything, even the lethal medicine, and they keep (unsuccessfully) trying to spawn through everything. LOL.

Anyway, my 75 gallon was supposed to be my only tank ... now somehow I have a 10 gallon divided betta tank, a 1.5g ADF tank, and two temp 1 gallon betta tanks that are just waiting to be put into another 10g! Beyond that, I'm dying for a shrimp tank (I actually might make a shrimp section in the middle of the second divided betta tank with real plants ...).

I just realised - this hobby is ADDICTING! And I love the look of Fluval tanks, so it makes it even worse ... my wallet can't handle everything I want.

So ... how did you get started? What makes fishkeeping so addicting to you? I find I just really love my fish ... and frogs, and crustaceans ... and inverts. ;D They're so fascinating to watch and some of them have really great personalities. I love 'em!

Fish keeping is very addicting. It all began when I made a trip to Petland.I was looking around and saw the aquarium aisle. There were so many types and then I saw all of the fish I could have!A few months later I had an aquarium. Now I have that aquarium,a small betta tank. Now I'm saving for one of those 6 gallon fluval edge tanks! In fact,I don't consider fish keeping a hobby anymore because it has become a part of my life.I spend every bit of money I can spend on fish now
Chris I am jealous of your 12 tanks lol.I don't have a lot of room though :/

My mom had an oscar when I was 3, or so, unfortunately he was in a 10 gallon but still that was my beggining. Then come to find out my grandmother had her tanks oh some 20 years ago a 75 gallon and around a 150 gallon. I guess I'm a descindant of a MTS family lol.
I got started with my fish when I got these Triop things, and bought them a 10 gallon tank. Soon they died because there life span is like a month and I moved into guppies, and its escalated from there

I'm jealous too. I don't have a lot of space either but I might have to start taking tanks downstairs, lol.

It's not a hobby, it's an addiction! A way of life!

lol lol

Every time I help someone out at a "big store" like a petsmart or walmart I always hear myself going "One of us ... one of us ... one of us ..." in the back of my head.

Well I'm very addicted because there is no end to the possiblities of what you can do with your tank, there are so many kinds of fish to learn about and experience caring for. I started out with a 10 gallon with about 15 assorted fish in it that really didn't go together. Of course nothing was living, so we took the tank down. This happened when I was a kid and about a year ago, I started really wanting some fish again! This time I decided to do it right and I currently have three tanks (but saving for more). the most rewarding thing is seeing yor fish look beautiful and healthy. I went from changing the water about 5 times a year and having my fish live an average of a month, to taking care of my fish and seeing them live longer, and look their best

So in answer to your question, the most addicting part about fish keeping is the knowledge piece for me. I love to learn and there is so much to learn about fish

For me, it's the many species available. I currently have african cichlids from 3 different lakes in different tanks.

I also really enjoy breeding. Once I get some experience under my belt with some of the "easy species", I'll be working towards more and more hard to find species to make them more available in the hobby and keeping endangered species on the planet.

It seems like every day more and more new species or new color variations are being discovered or introduced into the hobby. That's where it becomes addicting to me.

Hi,

I'm new to this forum...just signed up and saw this thread and I just had to comment on the addiction part. I was out of the fish hobby for about 14 years and I had a tenant move into my property that had a couple of bettas. I had to have one so I went out and bought me a betta plus minI aquarium. A week later I had another betta. Now six months down the road I have six aquariums, a 55 gallon community tank, 40 gallon angelfish tank, a 6 gallon guppy tank, a 5 gallon hospital tank and the two betta tanks.

And I'm probably not done yet. I am running out of space!

I started with gouramis. I was inexperienced and you probably know what happened. I got a bigger tank soon after that. Now I have two tanks with bettas in them. I have to say, I'm getting so addicted to bettas now, I see them as my friends, not just fish! My family members act like they just don't care! They think that fish can be replaced with new ones but that's not what I think. I'm very attached to my bettas and won't be getting any more fish at the moment. Why is it so addicting? I don't quite know the answer, but it makes me happy to see that they're happy. I get stressed really easily when they're not acting right. My bettas are very happy at the moment and I love them more and more each day! I think for me, it's the happiness of keeping your fish alive and healthy, to be able to enjoy watching them for hours and hours each day.

Good morning,

I just love fish. I love playing in water so the two make a good combo Caring for my fish and animals is what I do.

As I've grown older, aquariums, for me, are a great way to reduce stress and to relax. Even doing tank and filter maintenance is very relaxing for me. I actually look forward to water change days.

The thrill of new fish and new tanks, well, you know what that's like without me having to go into details . It's just awesome!

I love the sound of water falls, the gurgling of water in the filters.

The grace and beauty of a fish swimming is just hard to beat.

Plumbing....when I've had to do plumbing for the aquariums and everything goes smoothly with no leaks, there is another feeling of accomplishment. (not a plumber here) I like the challenge and tinkering around with tank equipment.

What got me hooked? When I was 5 I had a fan tail goldfish in a 5gal tank with an air stone. He lived for 3 years, until he died. Later on down the road when I was 11 I bought a 10gal tank and set it up with neon tetras. They died a week later. Frustrated with fish keeping I put my 10gal into my closet and locked it away for 6 years it just sat there.

Back in January this year me and a friend were in petsmart and they had a lemon Oranda for sale...at the time I just saw it as a white goldfish. But my friend bought the fish and bought a filter, a top for the tank and a light. Later that evening we set up my old 10gal (after I cleaned it really good) and after watching the little oranda swim around for a bit I was hooked like nobody's business. Not to much longer after that I fount fishlore and basically with knowledge alone it enabled me to build on my empire as I like to call it . I bought a vailtail betta sherlock, then a few months later added a crown tail betta plato to the group.

Then I fount a LFS called the petcove which I quickly became friends with the store manager and now I get discounts which rocks! My friend fount a 30gal tank someone was giving away and brought it to me which I promptly cleaned and set up for the Oranda who had been named Ghost. Then I bought a ranchu named oddessy (who recently passed away) After that I went to petcove and they had a little EBC for sale who was missing two legs and a claw but I bought him because someone wanted to put him into a cichlid tank and I know he would of been killed. So he went into the 10gal Ghost had came from. Then 7 months later on my birthday my parents allowed me to upgrade again to a 55gal corner tank, added a little spotted raphael catfish to it whom someone had let a rock fall on him and break his neck so now he is deformed and no one wanted him so my friend bought him and now I have him.

Now to date I have 10 running aquariums So for me its part I just love animals, part I want to care for the ones who are different and show people they can live perfectly normal lives, and part just listening to the running water and watching the fish swim about and be happy and me knowing I supply this for them...satisfaction knowing I can do something like this so well that I can supply life to so many living creatures is just beyond anything I can describe.
