I have had my betta named Arthur for 7 months. I've recently have upgraded his tank from a 3.5 Gallon to 5 Gallon tank.I used the bio sponge from the old tank filter. He has been in his tank for about 2 weeks but all of a sudden he has started to jump, and going to Conners of the tank and swimming off Rapidly, taking quite a few of naps and hovering over the bottom. There is no signs of bloating, Popeye, swim bladder and ich. I do weekly water changes, Is he going to be ok or sick? is it normal? why does he jump so frequently all of a sudden? Im very confused.

Is the tank cycled?
What are the water parameters?
Bettas often jump due to bad water quality and they will do anything to get out of it, even jump out of the tank.

I highly doubt he is doing this because of popeye, ich, etc.

The tank is cycled water is crystal clear I know that doesn't always mean good water quality. I don't know the water parameters exactly because I don't own a kit, I have like a screen-like lid on it I don't know if that has anything to do with it because after feeding he calms down.

I can't really tell you what is wrong without knowing your water parameters. Maybe go to your PetSmart and get your water tested?
I would highly recommend getting a test kit. Most Fishlore members own and recommend the API Freshwater Master Test Kit. I have it myself. It's much more accurate than test strips.

Are there any gaps in the lid. They will try to jump out of anything, even really small holes if they are determined.

My betta jumped and my tank was cycled. I think they like jumping. Unfortunately mine died, I found it too late. Now I block the holes on the cover.

Thanks for the recommendation, yes there are some gaps on the lid.

How big are said gaps? Are they big enough for a betta to leap through?

Thanks for the advice mine is sorta like a window screen top and there are some gaps along the edges of the tank. Because my old tank had a solid top and he never tried then. Ever since he was placed in the new tank I've been noticing new behaviours maybe jumping is one of them since there is more room.

When the top is on correctly there are small gaps like 1/8', however when not there is a little. If he jumps from the right angle (highly unlikely) I think he could probably slip threw.

He may be stressed and restless. Does your betta have a sleeping schedule? (Do you turn off his light at night and turn it back on in the am, consistent feeding schedule, etc)

If your parameterd are fine and nothing else is wrong, then you may just have a very jazzy betta. Bettas are active fish that can't be bored, or else they'll find ways to entertain themselves. They live jumping and swimming fast- thats why a small tank is a horrible idea for them (or any fish, really).

Just find a way to make the holes smaller or get a lid that can fit on yourtank properly ^^

Yes I feed him 9:30 am and 9:30 Pm, and turn off the lights around 11Pm and when morning rolls around kinda just lights up the room.

You may just have a very happy and excited Betta on your hands. I'd research ways on how to keep your betta entertained throughout the day so it doesn't try and pull a jailbreak on ya, and see what you can set up. I also definitely recommend getting the water testing kit. It'll help in the long run. ^^

Another tip; the average betta can jump about 2-3 inches high from the water surface. So if you can manage to at least keep your water 2 inches from the top, you'll be safer than, say, 1/2 an inch.

A suggest using masking tape to seal any gaps. My experience has been with other species, but if you see half a gap it’s usually big enough one day and then it’s to late.

Only very really do I and the fish get lucky and land in the tank below. I had a male endler turn up last week having I presume jumped from the tank above. I can’t see a hole but he found a way.
