Why fin rot

I have a betta about 2 yrs old. He keeps getting fin rot. He’s in a 5 gal tank. I do 25% water changes weekly. Cycled tank. No ammonia, no nitrites. pH a little high 7.5. I’ve been treating with Furan this time. Last time about 2 months ago emycin. Live plants. About 2” sand. Algae seems to like the environment and I wipe glass and wipe algae off plants with water changes. Any ideas why fin rot is so frequent?

Weak immune system. It could be stress, bad genes, old age.... I would do a water change to see if it helps.

From Petco. Just did 25% change today. I suppose it could be old age. I’ll send pic.

I’ve enjoyed him. Nips on my finger with his food. Flaring at me. Bettas are charming fish. If it’s his last months I want him to feel good. I’ll keep tending to his weekly water changes and checking water parameters. Hard to find well bred bettas. I’m in Greeley Colorado. Any ideas?

He does look kinda old. I would just do what you said. Provide him with a good tank in his last months. It seems he has had a great life though.

Ok. That’s what I wondered - age. Will keep him in good environment and hope he stays comfortable. Thanks for comments.

A variety of reasons that all boil down to one thing...
He's a betta. Good job getting him to last this long though!

Your tanks sounds about perfect, but you might want to upgrade to 10 gallons next time. Its just a more stable envirenment,
Aquabid.com has amazing fish!,
