Hi, My choc. chip starfish looked fine this morning. This evening , a portion of one of his legs turned white & hard. What could this be? Can he be saved or helped?

Thanks

I would say that the starfish is dying. I lost one of mine that way. Not sure exactly what killed it, thus I can't help you with that. All I can say is check the parameters like ammonia and nitrites. Some say high nitrates are bad for them aswell.

High nitrates are bad for pretty much everything. They're less toxic than nitrites or ammonia, but they can still be problematic.
Keep the water pristine, and hope for the best is about all I can suggest.
Hopefully someone else has an idea of what this is.

Sorry to hear that.
I think that if you cut the infected part it'll cure, not sure. My biology teacher once explained that if you cut a starfish's legs, it'll grow back and divide into more parts. I think that's how starfish reproduce, huh? Well just a guess.
