Why did my betta make a bubble nest?

before I knew any better I kept a betta in a 1.77 gallon aquarium without a heater, (Please don't yell at me! I have seen the error of my ways.) my question is why did he make bubble nests all the time? I know that these conditions are not what a betta should be kept in, but he appeared happy and I am curious as to why. Thanks.

It's what they do. Wheather there is a female or not. His biological clock is ticking.

I thought they did it when they were happy? (sorry if that's a silly question. )

Making the bubble nest doesn't mean tgat he is happy in such a small tank. Betta used to make bubble nests when they are young and ready for breeding. Sometime, feeding betta the live foods also may initiate the bubble making of betta. There may be another reason, such as high exposure to the light also irritates the Betta. In such cases, thay may produce a huge amount of bubble as well as some slimes so that the light can't get enter within the tank.
So there may a lot of things happening in your betta's mind. We don't know what it is & why he is making so much bubble.

ok, I hope you don't think I still keep my fish in such small tanks, (I wouldn't keep a betta in less than a ten gallon now.) That was just when I was still a little kid and I wanted a fishie. thanks for the responses you guys!
