Why are Cardinals considered more difficult than Neons

I am developing a stocking plan for a new tank and I am considering a school of about 20 Cardinal Tetras in a 40 gallon breeder tank. I read that Cardinals are difficult to take care of but Neons are easy. What is the difference in care requirements? As a newbie would I be better off going with Neons? Or if I research and understand the care requirements, will I be fine with Cardinals? What are the newbie mistakes in caring for Cardinals?

Thanks for your help.

I've heard (and experienced) the opposite. Cardinals are stronger, actually, because they aren't inbred. Neons are mass-produced and have garbage genes. Every neon I've ever had has died from fin rot, ich, or no obvious reason. They're worse than dwarf gouramis.

I find cardinals better. More color and more hardy. They also get a tad bit larger.

Cardinals are better schoolers and not more difficult to care for. Only thing is the require a higher temperature.

Cardinals like it a bit warmer, and perhaps a bit softer water, but generally aren't that hard to keep.

A school that size in a 40 breeder would look fantastic.
