Yep, have 5 A.tefe in my 125G. I did have a pair of A.trifasciata in there as well, but lost them due to a freak accident.

I ordered these through a lfs, they are Cacatuoides but as far as color variations I’m not sure. Someone told me they looked wild. They are still juveniles but seem to be growing pretty quick.

.

Sorry for your loss, they are beautiful fish and interesting personalities.

I do! I'm new to apistos, but already hooked. I have A. borellii.

I’ve never owned one, but am trying to figure out a way to get one.... just not sure if they’d work well in any of my tanks. Apistos are gorgeous and I’d love to be able to keep one or a breeding pair. The breeding instincts of cichlids have always fascinated me and I’d love to see that in such beautiful fish as apistos.

The Cacatuoides I have tend to stay at the bottom and occasionally go to the top. They pretty much keep to themselves and don’t bother my angels or Cory’s and the angels don’t bother them.

Go for it, Platylover! Great fish! Mine are peaceful with other tankmates, but I had lots of drama going on for a while when I accidentally put two males in one tank. (Thought I had a pair. Ooops.)

I have a trio and ended up with 2 males and one occasionally chases the other but I have it planted good and some caves so gonna wait a bit and get another female or 2. Then possibly put the 2 pairs in separate tanks

I was told that in some cases, the weaker male will lose the brighter colors and become a "sneaker" -- a male with more female-like coloration. I've not seen that yet for myself. I was also told rearranging tank decor can help curb aggression as it will upset boundaries and cause the two males to readjust, but that didn't work for me. It's worked for others, who told me it does not always work. Live & learn, I suppose. It was fascinating to watch, though!

Well, I’m not worried about the apistos being mean it’s my other fish... my 29 has two ansorgiis and I know they would not enjoy a cichlid of any type in their tank and would likely be a jerk to it. In my 65g I have a rainbow shark and I’m just not so sure he’d be ok with them. My male bosamanI might be a little upset to to be honest, he always hangs near the bottom(top dwellers? Hah, yeah right) and likes to follow the rainbow. Then any tank that I could do one in would be a 10 gallon and that’s most believe that to be to small and I rather agree. I am likely upgrading my cpd 10 gallon to a 20-35 hex prior to the end of the year, but that’s going to be a nano tank and I don’t like mixing non-nanos with nanos because of the size difference.

So I really want a pair, but I don’t think it’ll be possible for awhile unless I’m able to upgrade an empty 10 to a 20 long. Which I’m not sure I want to do since I’ve already am starting a hex project and ordering a significant amount of fish towards the end of the year... but who knows, Black Friday will be here soon...

Here's a picture of one of the pair I lost...

When the lights come back on I will try to grab some pics of the A.Tefe, although they are pretty shy and hard to photograph in a heavily planted tank!!

I finally was able to get a picture of my female. Whish I could determine what color morph they were, most seem to think they are wild.

I definitely do! I started off with a pair cacatuoides triple reds, those ended up being 2 males and then they both died on me. I went and bought another 7, a M/F adult pair and 5 juvies. I ended up losing all of those too. I took a break from apistos for a little and then bought myself a pair of agasizziI fire reds. Those played eggs for me like 5 times before they got right and got the eggs till about day 3 of wigglers. They ended up eating the eggs though so I was pretty bummed about that. I lost the female shortly after and have had the male in my 75 gallon since. I just recently bought a young female for him. She's in QT right now and I will be introducing them at the end of the month in hopes they spawn from me.

I am planning on starting a fish room (its been a very slow process) and I'll be keeping a total of about 7-8 different apisto species and color morphs

I have been doing everything out of my power to keep myself from buying some of these, I can’t catch the Apistos bug now, I’m trying to set up another nano tank with danios and gobies!...I really like apistos though, they’re so cute and small, and breed like rabbits if conditions are right...just the type of fish for me!
