White "stuff" from behind eye?

It's hard to describe but looks like scales that have sloughed off (to give an idea of size and shape) except that they seem to be coming from behind the eye! They stick out from the top edge of the eyeball where it fits into the skull. Only one or two at a time.

Parameters 0, 0, ~20
Temperature: 80
Behaviour: Normal
Appetite: Bottomless pit. Gets Nutrafin Bug Bites Cichlid Formula + North Fin Community pellets + frozen & live foods
Water changes: Minimum 50%, twice per week.
Tank size: 25 gallon.
Tankmates: One small female BN Pleco & Pest snails. Potted & floating plants.

I've been adding Nutrafin Tropical Extracts to the water. His fins are continuing to heal and grow since he came to me with a nasty case of fin rot on top of having been nipped by inappropriate tankmates.

I tried to get pictures but he wiggles too much when I approach the tank and the most you can see is a white blur above his eye.

Hello . Sounds like an infection. What kind of fish is it? Have you tried Melifix?

Angelfish. Big old guy. I haven't tried any medications yet because I don't know what I'm dealing with, if anything! It really looks like a shed scale that's got caught in his eyelid. Except that he doesn't have eyelids of course

How do I tell whether a fish has an infection anyway? His appetite is unchanged. Same with his activity level. He hasn't lost any weight. Colours haven't changed more than they usually do. Still wiggles when he sees me. I feel like I should do something...but what???

Well the reason I suggested Melifix is that what your describing sounds like either a fungal or bacterial infection. Melifix treats both. I had a similar problem with a Cory cat. After treating with Melafix it cleared up in 7 days.

Is it harmful to anything? I have a Pleco and plants in there.

Not at all its all natural (if you use API brand) I have plants and a pleco too. All are fine.

Good to know! I'll have a look through my stash of fish stuff just to make sure I don't already have it on hand and forgot about it (it happens!) and then I'll try to find it in town here, head to the next town if I have to.

Thanks!

*stupid Canadian PetSmart...grrr. Their website only lists Marine Melafix. The American site has it, but not ours. We have Bettafix or Pimafix. They probably do have freshwater Melafix but I'll have to call them to find out. I'll check with my local shop first, there's a faint hope that they will have it, I just thought my best chance would be at PetSmart!

Yeah, but you're in the States. Canada has quite a different selection:-\

I'll probably find it somewhere! It's a popular product and I'm sure if PetSmart doesn't have it then another store will. Just went through my stash and found some surprising things but Melafix wasn't among them

Thanks! Now to wait for the stores to open...

Just so you know, he's not in imminent danger of dying if his energetic "feed me" dance is anything to go by

I have to agree with you

Just looked in on him and between wiggles I could see that the white thing has fallen off again! I can tell where it was only because I know where to look but from most angles you can't even tell. What is this thing???
