So... Any ideas or has anyone seen these specs before?

This piece of driftwood has already gone through the obligatory white fuzz period as it adapted to my tank. It was then just the wood for a long time. However recently it has begun developing these tiny white specs all over it. They seem to come off with a bit of rubbing from my tweezers, but I haven't reached it to see about feeling them yet. When rubbed with the tweezers they seem to kinda squish and float away.

There are RCS, pond, and bladder snails in this tank.

Could they be snail eggs? I had snails lay eggs on my driftwood and they looked similar. very annoying. Do they leave little round circles when you remove the spots? Are they hard dots?

No, not likely, the only snail I know of that lays eggs like that are nitrites, but there aren't any of them in this tank. They don't leave anything behind when I remove them, and they seem fairly soft.
