White on Guppy Mouth About to Die/Possible Columnaris?

UnknownGuppyLover

I had a thread earlier about my sudden death of a new female guppy. Now I have a couple more deaths, but this one is showing some noticeable symptoms. This female guppy now has some white on her mouth and is pretty much gonna die by the morning. It’s laying on its side now and stays vertical sometimes. A couple things to note:

- did a rescape and gave away 200 guppies in my 15G guppy tub
- bought 3 female guppies 3 days ago and put them directly in the tank (had no quarantine available). I chose the best looking and healthy guppies.
- 1 female guppy suddenly dead yesterday. Loss coloration of tail fin and some red color on her body. Check my other thread.
- 2 more guppies dead. These guppies were healthy before I got my new guppies. They had been with me for a couple months.
- 8.2 ph, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 5 nitrate

what could be causing all this? At this point I realized that it’s most likely a disease. All opinions/thoughts welcome.

Could be columnaris. White around the mouth is a symptom. Its hard to tell much from the photographs. But columnaris or not, you're most likely dealing with a disease of some sort.

My first step would be to get your remaining guppies into some salt water. If you have plants in your main tank, then you may need to remove your guppies or risk killing your plants. A hospital tank may be a good investment here, and it could just be a cheap storage tote. Add aquarium salt at a ratio of 1 tablespoon per gallon. Its not a cure, but it may help infected fish recover and prevent the spread.

That's where it would end for me since getting antibiotics for fish here in Canada is difficult. But if you can get antibiotics, then that is the appropriate treatment. There are several that may work for you. See what is available to you locally, and go from there.

If you're going to be keeping guppies long term, and plan on adding any new guppies to established tanks then a quarantine tank is really a necessity. You might get away without it for other fish. But the guppies will get ya.

Good thing I have some salt handy. Sucks that my lfs doesn’t carry the meds I need so I would have to order online. And even then I don’t know if the fish would have made it by the time the meds came.
