what is this in the snail's shell? it wasn't there earlier today. eggs? tumor? god forbid mantle/lung collapse?

Any odd behavior?

I do not believe them to be eggs, mystery snails lay eggs in a conveyor belt fashion, they come out as single eggs and are transferred on the foot to the destination . The mother joins all the eggs together kinda like building a brick house layering each egg on top or next to each other . They don’t come out as that single cluster you see after the fact . I’m pretty sure that is just it’s siphon.

The siphon should be the same color as the body. I have several snails and I never seen or known any of them to have a siphon a different color from its body.
I would also like to know whether there is any odd or different behavior. How is your snail doing now?

This could POSSIBLY be early signs of mantle collapse which in turn after full collapse as happened can cause lung collapse which is what causes death later. I would watch closely for changed behavior. This is a copied message from a friend of mine that knows even more on this subject than me.

'I don’t think the lung would collapse with the mantle in tact because it’s protected. I think the mantle collapses which causes the lung to collapse which is the thing that actually kills them. A snail can live with a partial mantle collapse as long as you’re very gentle with them. Make sure you don’t try to lift it off of the glass.'

Oh! You are talking about the white mantle flap? I’m almost certain that the white part on the right part of the snail is it’s hypobranchial gland which is part of the mantle flap and **** sheath. I was trying to identify that dark mass on the left of the snail , which I believe to be it’s siphon . It’s a psuedopipodium another flap of skin that forms a siphon when extended . There is one on both sides of the body . The one on the left takes it in and circulates it and the one on the right releases air. I was curious about the mantle flap because it is usually a yellowish color . If water parameters are out of wack or if the snails foot is irritated by something it can sometimes cause discoloration. That’s just what I think it is though. Either way I hope everything goes well.

There isn't a hypobranchial gland on "each side" it's one long gland that runs alongside the bowels behind the entire mantle cavity and gill system. I doubt its that coming from that far back in the shell. And this gland isn't what releases or circulates air. That's the exhalant and inhalant siphon. This gland is what produces their mucus.

I’m not sure who’s post you read but it obviously wasn’t mine lol. I never once said there was a hypobranchial gland on both sides or that it was an apparatus for respiratory function. I said the PSUEDOPIPODIUM is on both sides and it’s used for circulation of air. You could be right about the mantle collapse but without us knowing its behaviors atm I’d have to say it is the mantle flap or **** sheath . Your friend knows a lot about mystery snails which I understand but that’s no reason to get all defensive or combative I was simply asserting my opinion. Sorry if I offended you.

I wasn't getting combative. I apologize for seeming like I had. I misread your comment and thought you were talking about the hypobranchial gland in the whole thing. You are right tho. Hopefully the actual behavior of the snail is normal.

well i've learned a lot about anatomy in this! I haven't seen the white thing since, all I saw when I flipped him over was an orangeish tube, which i'm guessing is the boy part. I'll keep watch for any changes in behavior or appearance. I get paranoid about mantle collapse, it just looks so painful...and glad to see you two informing each other too. thanks

Other than his junk hanging out lol. Tbh I can’t tell if he has a healthy mantle or not . Usually with a healthier mantle it holds higher in the shell if that makes sense.

I noticed that too. it was like that at the store. I thought the excess grey on that side had something to do with the thinner looking spot on the inside whorl of his shell, see where it looks flaky? I gave them another cuttlebone yesterday and he's munching on some kale right now. ph yesterday was about 7.5 so at least I hope that mends it.....my snails have...interesting problems.

Oh Hey Male Parts! Lol. That flaky part is not necessarily normal but it is a common place for the shell to start flaking if calcium isn't sufficient. I had the exact same thing happen to my first snail. It shouldn't effect him too much as long as you start making calcium more accessible in the water column. Over time the foot/skin that is exposed in that spot will start to toughen and thicken up to accommodate for the missing shell. Dosing calcium will give you the best results in a tank bigger than a 5 gallon. Especially if your ph is more on the lower side.
This is the best picture I have of her shell. On the golden one in the curvature of her whorl it was chipped and very cracked.

Awesome! Friends need a good quarrel from time to time lol
I definitely agree. I use to have this one BF her and I NEVER fought in 8 yrs of friendship. It ended very abruptly and VERY VERY badly lol. (Little off the topic helpful info haha!)
