White Ghost Shrimp? Is it sick?

I have a 55 gallon that has some ghost shrimp. One of them seems to be white, is he sick? Is he molting? Do shrimp even molt?

I think all shrimp molt and I also think that for it to be succesful they need certain minerals in certain quantities.
I don't know about the white shrimp, I don't keep shrimp, so hopefully someone can help us out.

 

Oh no! I'm sorry to say but I don't think you shrimp is going to make it. Opacity usually indicates an infection/sickness, especially if it turned white in you possession.
Don't beat yourself up over it tho. Ghost shrimp can be quite sensitive to water changes/parameters. Even dosing Excel or something similar can cause them to become sick
And yes, they can molt...I sometimes find skins in my tank (other times...the shrimp will eat them). For ghost shrimp, after a molt, they'll look a little more brown and less "ghosty" for awhile.

Should I just remove him then? Do you think if it were to pass away in the tank, it could make the others sick?

He's been white for a while now, probably about a month

 

He wouldn't necessarily pass it on to others, but its always a good idea to remove dead organisms as soon as possible.

 

You can go ahead and remove him, but there really is not much you can do about his current condition (if you are thinking about saving him). If he dies in the tank, he shouldn't really pose a problem as I am thinking he is dying because of stress from water parameters, rather than an infection (the latter would indicate a lot more than 1 shrimp dying). More likely than not, your other fish or shrimp will probably gobble him up when he passes if you don't remove him.

I wouldn't remove it until it actually dies though.
Other ghost shrimp might actually eat it and the fish living in the tank will probably eat it when it dies if you leave it in there.
Maybe removing it and quarantining him might be the best option and see how it does.
