To keep it from forming on the wood initially you are supposed to let it completely dry before adding it to the tank. Though I've never had any luck proving this myself it has always shown up on new driftwood. You can try vacuuming out as much as possible but the debris left floating around eventually settles on everything else. Unfortunately it can take a few cleanings to get rid of it but it shouldn't hurt anything. Alternatively you could try adding something that would eat it like a snail or some shrimp.
