Which tank to use for Quarantine Tank?

Now that I got my main tank healthy again, I'm not eager to repeat the sick fish/medication thing again. So I'm going to buy a 10 gallon aquarium to use as a quarantine tank.

However, my son has a betta in a 2 gallon heated tank. I was wondering if I could keep the betta in the 10 gallon until it is needed for quarantine, and then just move the betta back to the 2 gallon while treating the sick fish? Or would it make more sense to use the 2 gallon for quarantine? The filter for it is a whisper 3i, which probably isn't enough for most fish, right? I do want to give the betta a bigger home anyway...

What would you do?

I would put the betta in the 10G quarantine tank while not in use.

I would put the betta in the 10 gallon. For my hospital tank I just use a food safe plastic tote from Wal-Mart. Easy to store when not needed put the heater filter and a couple caves inside put the lid on and in the closet it goes.

I wouldn't even put any healthy fish in the quarantine tank. Think about it, the quarantine tank will be used for new arrivals and sick fish. Why run the risk of giving your Betta a disease?

A Betta will be fine in a 5G, so you can buy a 5G tank and a sponge filter. That will be best for a Betta.

The cheapest thing you can probably do is the following:
Give the betta that juicy 10 gal tank.
Buy a plastic container at Walmart and use it as a quarantine tank. They are easy to store and manage.

That is almost the same as what I do to grow up fry/quarantine fish, I set up a big tub up on my yard (Mexican weather) and go on with my business.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I will go ahead and get the 10 gallon for the betta. He gets so upset when I have to net him and dump his tank to clean it so I hope he will be happier.

I will also do the plastic container from Walmart for a quarantine tank. That does make sense to be able to sanitize and put it away when not in use. What size should I get? Still 10 gallons?

Judge off of the size of your largest fish. 10-20G is a good quarantine tank. You'll just need an air pump and a heater.

The one I use I think is around 8 gallons not exactly sure.

I see 18 gallon Sterilite containers on walmart for about 8 bucks. Perfect! Will a hob filter work for that or do I need a sponge filter?

I use the small internal power filter that came with my 10 gallon kit. But a sponge filter would be fine as well. Just make sure that whatever filter you use its going to be a sufficient size for the container that it needs to filter.

You can use either kind of filter. I've seen people make a little cutout in the lid for a HOB. I have a 5 gallon Qt tank, but also a 6.25 gallon sterilite for a Qt too.

A HOB would work, you just need to have the water level high. I'd use a sponge filter in a quarantine tank because it's simple. You don't need powerful filtration for a quarantine.

This is a great and useful thread!
Do any of you gave pics if your Q "tanks"?
I *need* to set something up for when my tank is cycled, but wasn't sure what would be suitable.
Filter or none?
Airstone?
Etc
What is needed, and for how long do most of you Q?

This is my 5 gallon QT. It looks a little different now, I have way less plants (only 2) in it. I have a filter and heater, no airstone. Many people do bare bottom, I happened to already have the gravel in there, but if I need to set it up again, I may do minimal gravel, if any at all. I also don't use the light when I QT as it's pretty bright. I was able to QT for 2 weeks. I take into consideration how long my LFS has had the fish when I determine how long to QT., and I've qt'd 3 fish at a time. My qt is broken down and stored away now, and the filter media is in my main tank's filter.

You can tuck away the QT and supplies when not in use, but don't forget filter media for the tank. I keep extra media in my main tank so it can quickly be moved to the QT tank when I need to set it up.

I also have a 6.25 sterilite container that I can use as a qt tank, if needed.

I keep an extra filter (internal) in my display tank and whip it out when I need the QT. After everyone is out of QT, I let the filter dry out, pull the filter apart and replace the sponge, sterilise the outside and let dry again, then put back in to reseed for the next time I need it. The QT goes back in my son's cupboard until it's needed again

Was out and saw this, I think it might be suitable?
Online reviews sat that it's ~4gals.
Thougts?

I have a small heater, but what about filtration ideas for this?

Personally I would just go and get a sterilite container a little bit bigger and easier to find filtration for but I don't have any experience with the critter keepers. Maybe some one that will have a better answer for you regarding filtration

Just a sponge filter is all that is needed for a quarantine tank.

Here's my sterilite. It's a little over 6 gallons, and I store my fish stuff in it. Fits in the closet when I don't use it. I think I paid about $7 at Home Depot. They may be even less $ at Walmart and there are all sorts of sizes. Make sure you get food grade, which I believe sterilite is, if you go that route.
