Which Fish Do Betta’s Get Along With....

Looking to potentially add a beautiful Betta to my setup, currently got two mollies and 6 Cardinals in there alongside a couple shrimp. Is this a compatible family? Also has anyone got any advice or tips for keeping them?

Many thanks!

No, bettas will go after most fish with colorful, long fins. Maybe a group of female bettas will work. What kind of shrimps do you have? Amano/bamboo shrimps should be okay with a betta but smaller dwarf shrimps will be at risk.

What size tank? Neon tetras look very pretty with bettas. Depending on the size of the tank, they should work. You want a school of 6 or more.

You could also add some more mollies!

54L tank, with two wood and one amano shrimp. Was considering one male potentially although just considering options at the moment!

I think it depends on how aggressive the betta is. I've kept one in my community tank with guppies, and had no problem. But then I switched that betta out with a different one, and the new betta nipped the guppies' fins and caused problems. Maybe at the store, you can compare the bettas to see which ones are not as aggressive. When introducing them to your community tank, make sure to have a backup just in case it doesn't work, though. Good luck!

I agree with Hung Bui, it's all about the bettas' personality, but you should be cautious just in case. If it's a good-tempered betta it'll be fine with the amano shrimp.

My first betta was very mild tempered and was fine with my community of zebra danios, corys and platies. My second was fine for about 6 months in the same community (1st betta had passed away) and then he started attacking one of my danios and killed it before I could intervene. He didn't seem to bother any of the others but I got him re-homed into a tank by himself asap. He would not even tolerate snails with him after that. Would bump them off of rocks, driftwood, side of the tank every chance he got. I have heard of many people having good success with bettas in communities though, just food for thought. There are many betta lovers here who may be able to guide you on how to pick a mild one. Good luck!

I think OP said the tank is 54L... just under 15 gallons, not really an ideal size tank for a male betta with community fish. I think the tank is already pretty stocked

Yeah 54, id hate to introduce one in haste and then it goes wrong! Maybe opt for some other nice colourful fish

OR... you could get a nice little 5 or 10 gallon setup and Then get a betta
Maybe someone here with more stocking experience could chime in... but I think your tank is pretty full already... I believe it is recommended for both mollies and cardinals to be in a larger tank than what they're in now
Anyone?

In my opinion bettas should only be with three things snails, shrimp and other bettas (female of course ) they are solitary creatures and they like to be alone. Also neon and bettas don't really go together they have different temperature ranges bettas prefer to be in 78-82 degrees and I believe neon like to be in 69-75 degrees???

It depends entirely on the personality of the betta, some betta will not even tolerate snails, some bettas couldn't care less.
However at least a 20 gallon long is needed to attempt it in case either fish needs to get away from the other (as bettas can become targets for other fish, mollies are actually pretty bad about harassing betta), it needs to be heavily planted with tons of hiding places, and you need to make sure the betta is getting food without overfeeding it.

Sororities are hard even for experienced fish keepers, most people don't give them enough space or don't know how to read when there is a problem (reading the fish, not words) and acting immediately to fix the issue.

I might be able to help

OP, the mollies really ned 29+ gallons because of their large bioload, and the cardinals need 20+ gallons because of their activity. So why not rehome everyone else and get a betta You can also divide the tank and get 2-3 bettas.
