Which Filter should I buy?

This will be the second filter for my fancy goldfish tank. I have a really crappy and really old (full of good bacteria though so it’s staying for a bit) topfin filter on the tank currently and I wanted to add a second filter. I was going to buy this one-
Fluval U3 Underwater Filter, Freshwater and Saltwater Aquarium Filter, A475
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001TKZ51E?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_3QF4M71B1YV4MK0DXTGK

But I’m concerned bc my telescope goldie has trouble swimming in strong flow- I’ve had to turn the flow way down in my topfin. The fluval is adjustable but I’d like a second opinion.
second option would be two sponge filters.
Which should I do?

I’ve had that filter & didn’t like it at all.
They may have changed the design since I had mine, hope so, I found it bulky, little room for much media & that tilt action to clean it was a pain to get back on again, I wouldn’t have another

Ah thank you for the reply! Would you recommend sponge filters then?

I think goldies need more than a sponge filter, I’m in the Uk so don’t have many of the same products. I have seen people recommend the Tidal, I’d hang on for some more opinions from Us members.

Yes for sure, they have a HOB filter already and I’m just getting a second one.

How big is the tank? I just switched from a HOB to a small cannister fluval 206 at thanksgiving. I can’t believe how much easier it is to clean it.

This is a filter I recommend to any one looking for a second filter.https://www.amazon.com/Odyssea-Inte...1676747638&sprefix=odyssea+250,aps,103&sr=8-2. This is the 250 and there is a 350 too. These internal filters just work! I’ve got at least 8 of these. Because they’re so cheap I bought 2 extras of each type. So far I’ve never had one break. Some of mine are 4-5 yrs old. For a high waste fish like gold fish these pull everything out of the water. The 2 cages each hold a sponge filter. Rinse these as often as you need to. You’ll be shocked how much these things pull out. Plus each sponge is full of bacteria. So if you need to start a new tank you just take a used sponge and add it to new tank. Instant cycle :).

Interesting and really cost efficient I like it!

The thing with a canister is you will need to clean it more often than most do because of the goldfish waste.

Yeah I’m not entirely sure what I’ll do. I’m looking at maybe just entirely upgrading the HOB filter to a tidal filter for 55 gallons and calling it a day

I’ll just toss this out. Go w an AquaClear 70 or 110 HOB. They can be set to lower flows and all, but you’ll need major filtration to adequately take care of the Goldfish waste levels imho.

Yeah I love my aquaclears- I use them for my other tanks. I’m trying to see if there’s a difference btw the aquaclear and the Seachem tidal I’ll buy one of those

36 gallon I would recommend a Tidal 55-75 or an Aquaclear 50-70 it’ll work perfect for your setup… their both adjustable flow.

The tidal waves ll usually start back up much easier aside from that their both pretty flawless and able to hold a lot of media… not really anything bad to say about em

I’ve had Aquaclears since the 80’s. When Hagen owned them before Fluval bought them. . I can honestly say I had/have no issues with the Aqua’s for a HOB filter. Just size them up for your tank, very simple to clean, maintain, the sponge and I actually use filter floss with some bio rings. Easy! I got one on a 10 gallon, and it’s been great. The 70 should be good, you can adjust the flow rate if needed.

Yes my whole family has been using aquaclears for that long too haha that’s why I use them! My dad introduced us to the brand in the 90s

I keep my tank water level high and thus all my 7 ACs have never failed to get going after a power interruption. When I change/clean them including removing the intake tube, then I’ll have to pour water into the media bed to get it going. If the water is much lower than right near the outflow, these will have trouble reestablishing the water flow requiring water pour ins.

I ordered the AC 70 on Amazon just now and just wanted to let everyone know there was an 8$ discount going on for it in case anyone needs one

Aquaclears for me when I used HOBs. Now in storage, still use once in awhile when I want to polish the water after tank rearranging.

I think all suggested ones are fine. Just remember for these guys. Low Flo is the way to Go! At least until they get bigger. I prefer the Tidals myself.
BTW GG, what is that flap over the ranchu's right eye? Is it wen growth that looks like it's already starting to cover the eye? Or maybe it's just the pic?

Yep, made the move to Eheim canisters and have used on all my tanks. Just got tired of the waterfall effect (noise) when the water level got low also the pump at times would not restart when a power outage occurred.

Good Luck!

This will work. I’ve used it n a 29g. I made a spray bar out of tubing to spread out the output. Works great!

Nice I’m going to make the switch eventually as well

His narial bouquet? I think that may be what you’re seeing from that angle, otherwise no his wen is very small currently with no forward growth over the eye
