Where to Find Scientific Articles Online?

I was wondering, so every once and a while, I'll see people saying this is a cool article I found, but I don't really see any very scientific articles on fishkeeping. Where do you guys find them? Any like sites that have exclusively for scientist's studies?

If you have access to Web of Science, you can search for any science. Pubmed may not include some nonmedical journals. However, be prepared to sort through a bunch of papers on fish biology and ornamental fish industry. They don't typically research at the hobbyist level.

There are many papers out there on genetics that base on oryzias latipes (medaka, japanese ricefish) and zebra danio (Danio rerio). These are standard model organism for genetics. The third fish in many scientific papers is the xiphophorus species. Every university keeps strains of only one species.

I started with google and got to sites like springer press. On this sites only the excerpt is free, the rest of the paper is pay per view. Some universities have complete papers online. It is all about search engines and the right words you search for...

There are some sites that are part of the Open Access movement and publishes paid articles for free. Not sure if it is frowned upon here to use those services

I like to use Google Scholar and Research Gate. Just make sure to put “ “ around any words that you want absolutely included in the search. For species-specific info, use scientific names.

I kind of just want to browse articles, and see the newest information and studies when they come out. Instead of looking specifically for a certain topic. Any like that?

JSTOR is great

Honestly I usually just type whatever content I want into Google followed by "scholarly journal" though lol

You can also look in specific journals that deal with fish biology Eg Journal of Fish Biology and Journal of Icthyology. Biotropica deals with all aspects of tropical ecology and may have fish articles, Animal Behaviour often has fish articles as well. You should be able to see a list of recent publications in any of these. There are many others but those would be good staring points if you just want to browse the titles of articles without searching for a specific subject. You will probably only be able to see the abstract for free in most cases.

If anyone here is a student in North America JSTOR has a massive library of full-text free journals that not a lot of people know about. If you need to write an essay then JSTOR will have 90% of what you need a lot of the time. I usually include a minimum of 10 sources in my papers and that takes 30 minutes of searching at most

They have some aquaculture stuff too, this one came up right away. "The Balanced Aquarium," written in 1962. Looks like a fun read

THE BALANCED AQUARIUM on JSTOR

Most researchers will give you a copy of their papers if you ask. All those "purchase this paper" sites are generally scams, and the author of the work doesn't get anything from it.

Having someone ask for your Ph.D thesis and defense is kind of cool for some folks.
